My struggle in Lowlife.

But I knew what was wrong. It was my graphics card. I don't think my ram would have made any difference to the flashlight or not? (example) Now be quiet and get out of my thread.
Then what was this thread for then, if you "knew" what was wrong? Why even post it? You're now trying to say you WEREN'T asking for help / advice by making this thread? You just posted it to let mankind know that your flashlight didn't work in HL2, in case someone cared? And you're trying to say that you didn't have any questions about it? GTFO. You had questions, but for whatever reasons, you didn't want to supply the necessary info that others would find useful in assisting you. And now you are trying to turn it around so that I (the guy that came to see if I could help) am the asshole. How amusing.

Based on what? It's still all speculation, because he didn't understand that his flashlight problem could (likely) be a hardware (GFX Card) issue, and didn't want to tell anyone anything about his PC. This thread is around three months old though, so I'd say it's redundant, as he won't say:

what his specs are,

if he has even completely and satisfactorily solved the problems,

and if so, how he did it.

So pretty much this thread is a waste of space, and won't help anyone, because Xendance isn't forthcoming with ANY relevant information.

Based on his other thread in hardware and software.

You're right, it does look like it. Let's see, he posted that just after this thread was revived, and I had once again pointed out that he had not posted any specs...

Well, that only took the best part of three months for him to do.

I only posted this thread to tell the community about me getting through Lowlife without a flashlight, which other people would perhaps not get through.
Yes, I posted it in the hardware forum. I did that because I was browsing my xfire profile, and noticed another thread about someone's new rig, so I decided to post one about my really bad one.
Why are you getting so worked up? I wasn't asking for help. If I were, surely it would go in the help forum?

Well I just want to show the fact that Shasta has always been a jerk.
Wow. Your thread is now four pages long, and is of absolutely NO help to anyone that has a similar problem, all because you didn't want to post your specs in here, or tell anyone if / how you have solved any of your graphics issues. All you did was work AROUND one problem using some console commands. You didn't SOLVE the problem and get the game working properly, and wouldn't give out any info that would have let smarter people help you. I don't care about it any more, but I do care about the way you handled yourself in this thread. And now you attitude has spilled over into other areas...

Well done.

PS - love the sig. It's nice to know that every time you post, you will think of me.

Well there is a separate thread on the Help & Support section about the whole flashlight not working on onboard graphics with advice on how to solve it... so no harm done.

Anyway Xendance intended this thread as a "special achievement in HL2 gaming"
kind of way... sort of like if someone finished the whole game only using the crowbar or something. And the solution to the problem IS posted in this thread you know.... I dont see what the fuss is all about..

And the solution to the problem IS posted in this thread you know
A WORKAROUND is not a solution.

As for the rest of it, would this thread have been more helpful to him and others if he had just posted his specs etc? Yes. Yes it would have. End of story.

To me (or to any rational person I'm sure) a problem is something which prevents a individual from completing a task. A solution is something which will NEGATE the problem enabling the individual to complete the task.

Here the lack of visibility(problem) due to the broken flashlight(cause) is fixed by enabling the flashlight using a few console commands(solution). Sure the flashlight is from the original HL and thereby lacking the newer graphical bells and whistles but it serves the purpose in that it enables the user to see in the dark. Problem solved.

I think Xendance used a workaround in that he didn't fix the problem but played on using walkthroughs and whatnot.

Xendance didn't ask for help in the first place. He had already completed the level by the time he posted here. And if he did want help he would have started the thread in the Help and Support section.

There's no need to be so pedantic now is there?

NOT solved. WORKED AROUND. There is a BIG difference, and it matters to a lot of people who don't like to settle for things.
If it was SOLVED, he would have the CORRECT flashlight working, or KNOW why he cannot (hardware etc).

Oh REALLY. He DIDN'T ask for help? I'll direct you to his post on the first page then:
Well no. Im not asking for help really. My (future) step-dad works as Head of ICT in his school. When I got the game, it didn't work so I asked him to help. He fixed it, so now I am asking for help with the flashlight bit.
Also, some areas are in wireframe. At the beginning of the game I was like "WTF!"
Sounds like asking for help to me...

Ok, ok, Shasta's right, everyone else is wrong, let's move on with our mundane lives.

One look at his sig is enough...but,

I think what he meant was he was going to ask his step dad to help him with the flashlight since he already helped with getting the game to run. So he wasn't asking for our help...unless of course Shasta, you are his step dad or something;). Read the whole post please.Carefully note the words "Im not asking for help really".

Well then the only "solution" would be to tell the guy to buy a newer graphics card which is hardly constructive because he already knew that he had a crappy graphics card. So in his case getting the old flashlight IS the best solution ... I don't know how to explain this better.

@G-Dub - Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am ashamed to claim that I had to look up the word "pedantic"... English is not my first language.

So now your resulting to editing quotes?
Sounds like your sad to me...

Now I've pinned you down to two words? Got nothing else to say? Get in before a lock.
...pinned? With words? BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahaha.

There's nothing more to say kid. Arguing with you is like arguing with a retarded kid who thinks up is down. Entertaining, but he'll just never quite get it...

You shouldn't argue with Retarded Kids, Shasta. :(

Leave it to Shasta to try to hijack a thread to make him look like the god among hl2.netters.

That spots reserved for Short Recoil, thank you.

I give up. All I wanted to do was post about my achievement of Episode One.

Well done. Glad that idea worked out for you. What's your specs?

On a side note, if (as you claim) you didn't want any help and just wanted to *cough* "brag" about your dealy-o, why didn't you just say something like "I did lowlife without the flashlight - mine doesn't work (crap system / GFX card, don't worry, I'm sorting it out). So umm, yeah. Just letting you know."?

Well I could have. But I didn't think of it.

Damn shasta, cut the dude's balls off why don't you. ;)

why don't you try to help him in the "Help & Support" thread, instead of bitching up a storm in here?

But I AM helping him. I'm helping him to think next about what he wants to say, and how best to say it, BEFORE he posts. Unless there is something wrong with him, I bet he won't make any more posts with missing info or worded in a way that can be easily mis-interpreted. So he has been helped, and anyone who encounters or tries to help him in the future will have it a bit easier on them now too. Hopefully...

Ooh boy, Shasta the lowlife (stupid unfunny pun intended).

Original Quote:
I am asking him for help with the flashlight bit.

Shasta's Edited Quote:
I am asking for help with the flashlight bit.

This is sorta how it went (IMO, and I'm sure that of many others):

My Interpretation said:
Xendance: "Woot! I passed Lowlife with a flashlight that works on certain surfaces! Cool."
Shasta: "Amagad it's not working? You need my help! ... eh you **** you didn't post your specs."
Xendance: "I don't really need your help, my stepdad's helping me."
Shasta: "Hah! You did ask for help you dumb shit."
Xendance: "You edited my quote."
Shasta: "Err, well, about that... yeah you know what? **** you, you stupid kiddo shithead. This is actually 'entertaining' to me."
Everyone: *collective sigh*
Shasta: "Why didn't you just say I didn't need help?"
(Note that Xendance already stated it but Shasta refused to listen. And this is also admitting that he was wrong.)
Xendance: "Yeah well, whatever, lock this."

By logic, helping others leads to a positive reaction, while cursing at others leads to a negative one.

Helping others yet cursing them because they said they didn't really need help leads to a reaction that follows as thus: "God you must be desperate to help me, but ****, I really don't like you calling me a dickhead or a ****er anyway."

Does not compute.

So, going by logic, Shasta likes to be flamed? Likes to flame? Likes to be called a ****er? Or just to be a troll?

I don't know. Lock.

Ah, man, don't antagonise Shasta.
