My video files are dark.. eh?

All of them are darkened, no matter what they are played in. What could this be?

try changing the overlay color settings, especially gamma. If that doesn't work then google for little apps that can fix it.

If that doesn't work, WMP9 has temp settings for making things brighter, contrast, color etc.

Ta - it seems to be a WMP only thing, since media player classic and MSI PowerDVD are fine

ahh right. Well check out the overlay settings all the same, should be able to set them higher as default then so you don't have to fiddle with the temp settings inside WMP all the time (took me a while to realise that worked lol)
