need help installing half life 2

ok so i installed half life 2 and stuff but when i click on play half life 2 and then at the steam thing i click on register a product i already own i have to register a cd key. i typed it exactly how it was but it says it isnt valid, the key is exactlylike this with the same amount of numbers and stuff just ill show you what its like with different letters

its like that only with different numbers and letters, how would i enter it?

Are you supposed to have that "halflife 2" in there? I have never installed HL2 so I wouldn't know. Perhaps there is an instruction manual with the box that tells you how to install?

Errr, if thats your real CD key, I would remove it.

On the cd-key window it says

Keys look like this:
1111-22222-3333
AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE


so you'd know to not enter the stuff on the 'HALFLIFE 2' line if you read the example. :|
