every time i launch half life 2, it opens steam and has to download a massive 200mb + update - i have 56k, so that cant really be d/led in my case. i thought you don't need internet to play single player games... at a net cafe, they have hl2 and steam, but hl2 is launched directly, without requiring steam. does anyone know how to launch half life 2 normally without the aid of steam?

it might be an update if u havent updated in a really long time or some file is not
there

I didn't think you could, as far as i know Steam is required 100% with hl2, however i may be wrong.

You are downloading updates for CS: S you need to disable updates for that.

And the cyber cafe is using an illegal version of HL2

oh i see. so there's no way to alter the 'start location' for hl2 to run it without steam? unless if you crack it?

Have you got CS: S installed?

Because that's what the massive update is for, the HL2 update is no more than 10 megs.

Yeah. If you don't intend on playing CS:S, uninstall it. Then the updates won't take nearly as long. And no, you can't run HL2 without Steam unfortunately (without using cracks/etc)

downloading once isnt really the prob - ist just it happens alot

i paused the cs: s download, and launched only the hl2 download, which is 860mb. 72% was already loaded from the cd, then the rest would take like 13 hours to get down...

if you d/l the data into your steam account from another pc - wont it be accessible from any pc as long as you use the same account?

by the way - how do i uninstall only source? when i prompt to uninstall hl2 or steam, won't both the games be deleted? if i go to add/remove programs@my computer, source doesnt appear- im guessing its under steam - but if i uninstall steam, wont both games go?

You can uninstall games by right-clicking them in STeam, then go to Properties. There should be something that says "delete local game content".

If you are asking about downloading it on someone elses connection then transferring the GCF somehow(DVD or whatever) Yeah you can do that.

And for the second question, go into steam and right click and then select local game content for the game you want gone, and then find the properties dialog game and select "do not update this game"

And that is really weird that your update is starting from 79% it's almost like it didnt get everything off the CD. Because you should for HL2 be atleast starting off from 98%

i suddenly got this reall weird prob...

somehow, most of the steam contents were destroyed, and now my steam won't launch. i tried playing hl2, with no luck.

so, i put in the cd, and it was as if it was still there. i clicked play. no luck. so then i tried unintsalling it - it said that hl2 doesnt exist and so there is nothing to uninstall. i cant uninstall it or install it, and i cant repair it because there is no 'steam folder to copy the files into'
