Hi there!

Thought I'd actually join this list now that I have read almost every response presented about the source code theft.

Personally, I think software development companies should stop using IE and Outlook and switch to either Netscape, Mozilla or Opera for their own safety, and install personal firewalls on all of their machines so they cant be individually compromised from other machines on the network.

Now that the HalfLife 2 source code is "opened source" they may as well distribute a "Master Edition" that includes all the source code LEGALLY and sell it for say $199 versus the standard game price. Offer a bounty for the first OpenGL port and the first Linux port. Heck, I'd even pay $499 for such a "Master Edition" just for the chance to have my name associated with one of the ports...

Now, having said that, what interests me are the many statements saying that source code from other companies and products are within the HalfLife 2 source code. Can someone send me a list of those other companies?

Just like Valve is upset that their souce code is stolen, if I find MY source code has been stolen and included in HalfLife 2, there will be further reprecussions from my end, but I dont intend to stop the game's release. More like making sure either royalties are paid where applicable or credit given as wanted. Of course if it's any of my GPL code being used, I want the source code distributed with the game...

Anyway, just my 2 cents... Hope someone can help with it...

there are only valve-owned games
cs,hl1,tf2 :x

They can't do that. Havok's physics (which are an integral part of the engine) can't be redistributed in C++, so they can't put it under the GPL. The profits would be less than the damages from Havok, who is sure to sue, it'd hurt them substantially (they'd lose all their business, because others could buy their code for $500 from Valve, as opposed to a whole lot more from them).

Also a big part in the reason why IE/Outlook is so vulnerable is because lots of people use them. If the same number of people used, for example, opera I’m sure that people out there would devote a whole lot more time to finding out exploits that work under opera and rest assured you can be confident the same number of exploits exist. It is just a case of it hasn't been worth the time to find them.

I think when a professional storing his/her works such as in our case the computer have to be disconnected from the Internet at all time.

I don't know how much game's engine cost such as HL2 source engine, But if you have a very important works and it costs a lot you should not connect the PC that hold the works to the Internet.

You people need to realize MS isn't the only software company that puts out vulnerable software. The fact is, with such widely availabe / used software, there will be more people attempting to write hacks / cracks for the said software. Trust me, Netscape has it's issues as does every other software suite.

Besides that, everything said so far is pure speculation. Though it makes me wonder how / why Gabe is already pointing the finger at MS software. Maybe he should wait until they actually find the source, then start pointing the finger?

Afterall, if he's asking the community for help, the he obviously doesn't know what went down. And people should take his comments as pure speculation at this point.

This whole thing sucks, but live and learn, eh?

I wen't trekking this weekend, and sometime during the trip i lost my wallet. I lost 30€ that was in this bus card, 9 movie tickets(the kind you exchange for a working ticket) and my bank card, library card, diffrent membership cards and some €. Now i know not to bring any important stuff along when i go trekking next time.

Still it sucks majorly...
