As we've stated before, 2004 has been overwhelmingly the year of the
zombie. We've had the wonderful Shaun of the Dead, the stunning Dawn
of the Dead remake, and coming up still is Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Yep,
it's been a good twelve months for shambling, shuffling, brain-eating ghouls.

Yet it's been slightly galling to see the zombie renaissance take place
without input from the man, the legend, the genius who started it all:
George A. Romero. The Pittsburgh-based film-maker has had to watch
while remakes and homages to his past work - the Dead trilogy, Night
of the Living Dead, Dawn... and Day of the Dead - invade cinemas, even
as his own attempts to get a fourth in his series stumble and stutter.

Well, not anymore. Hard on the heels of the announcement that he will be
directing Diamond Dead, a zombie musical (unrelated to his trilogy)
produced by Tony and Ridley Scott, comes today's welcome news that a fourth Dead film is on the way.

Land of the Dead - replacing the earlier mooted titles, Dead Reckoning and
Twilight of the Dead - will start filming in Winnipeg or Pittsburgh
this October, after Romero finally secured a financing and distribution
deal. And for zombie fans, that's joyous news.

The movie will take place long after the original trilogy, with the
zombies' threat to society significantly reduced. Now they are treated
with all the compassion afforded to homeless people, and drag
themselves around the streets of a walled city where anarchy reigns on the
streets and skyscrapers have been specially fortified to protect the wealthy.

However, a group of scavengers must thwart a plot to overthrow the
city's hierarchy while facing another problem: the zombies are mutating into
more advanced, more deadly creatures...

Romero will direct from his own script. No word yet on budget, or
whether effects maestro Tom Savini will return. We'll keep you posted,
naturally.

Saw that too, pretty good movie. But the ending though, is quite disturbing IMO.

Excellent.. I just hope he can stay true to his own vision and not lose himself in an attempt to get noticed in today's climate (lots of explodey stuff and pointless action)

Not entirely sure I like the whole mutating zombie idea.. the dead do not mutate

Well the dead are dead, they just get deader. So far his three films showed that, with the dead become more and more rotton over the course of the trilogy. For them to suddenly become intelligent advanced creatures seems far fetched (even for a zombie flick) Bub is a good example of it being a bad idea. The whole deal with Romero's dead was the radioactivity kept a small part of the brain alive, just enough for really basic functions.

It will have to be done VERY VERY VERY well for this mutation idea to work.. but if they start sprouting extra arms and legs and talking properly, then it'll bomb

"humanising" a zombie, bad idea (bub)

Think Gremlins 2.. first movie was great, second make a Gremlin too clever. Bad idea.

Alien movies, eventually humanising the Alien, bad idea

Zombies are dead reanimated flesh that don't eat, sleep, breath. But have this built in desire to eat the flesh of the living or recently dead. Even though they don't require it (or possibly do require some substance but nobody knows for sure)

Just seems weird that suddenly they are now mutating to something more advanced, doesn't quite fit.

The Biohazard/Resident Evil games explains these things quite well. Those "zombies" aren't dead. Just living beings who are decaying rapidly & feels an urge to pass on the T/G-virus to non-contaminated beings. And the RNA-type gene in them mutates uncontrollably almost. So yeah "dead" people can mutate :)

Brains!
By Voltaire (the singer, not writer)

"Well hello there little boy.
Now don't be shy.
Step right up, I'm a reasonable guy.
Don't be frightened by the look in my eye.
I'm just your average evil meteor from outta the sky.
Well, I'm just a little shy and scared in this place
I'm just a fish outaa water from outer space
You can see that the trip has left me tired and drained
So why don't you be a pal...
And bring me some BRAINS!

Go down to your neighbor's place
See the dull expression on his face
you'd be doing him a favor if you brought him to me
He's not using his brain he's just watching TV!

Go down to Mr. McGee's
He hasn't had a thought since '43.
His brain is the portrait of atrophy.
He ain't using it, why not give it to me?

BRAINS, BRAINS, I won't lie,
I'll drink their brains 'til they're zombified.
Sure they might think it's deranged
But they won't give it a thought
Once I've eaten their brain.
BRAINS, BRAINS, It's okay.
It's not a matter if it isn't gray,
And if at first they think it's strange,
They won't think twice
If they don't have a brain!

Go down to the Wonton shop,
My fortune cookie says that I just can't stop
I'll suck the noodle right out of their heads
And half an hour later, I'm hungry again!

Creep into the donut shop
Sneak in tip-toe past the cop.
Pick me up a cruller and a cupful of tea.
And any other sweetbreads you happen to see.

BRAINS, BRAINS, I won't lie,
I'll drink their brains 'til they're zombified.
Sure they might think it's deranged
But they won't give it a thought
Once I've eaten their brain.
BRAINS, BRAINS, It's okay.
It's not a matter if it isn't gray,
And if at first they think it's strange,
They won't think twice
If they don't have a brain!

Brains, Brains, I love em, I need um...
My tummy jumps for joy when I eat um.
Big ones, fat ones, short ones, tall ones,
They're so delectable, especially the small ones.
No time to cook em in a skillet.
My belly's rumblin', I got a need to fill it.
I don't fry em, the heat will only shrink em,
i'll just grab my self a straw and drink em!!!

Now you've been swell to go around
And bring me every single brain in town
But with all these brains, I can't help but think
That there isn't one left out there to drink.

Fess up boy, come on, Heck!
Is there someone that you're trying to protect?
Bring her down here to meet her end
And i promise I'll be your bestest friend.

BRAINS, BRAINS, I won't lie,
I'll drink her brains 'til they're zombified.
Sure she might think it's deranged
But she won't give it a thought
Once I've eaten her brain.
BRAINS, BRAINS, It's okay.
It's not a matter if it isn't gray,
And if at first she thinks it's strange,
She won't think twice
If she don't have a brain!

BRAIN.....
Bring me her Brain.....
BRING ME HER BRAIN!!!!!!!!
Mwahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

Mmmmmm......brains......

That song is MUCH better heard than read. Grim and Evil.. I loved the song when I heard it, very catchy tune heh. Couldn't find it anywhere though, just the lyrics :(

I've got to say, hearing about this 'mutated' zombie thing does worry me a little. As long as they cant run/talk/and have feelings (ugh) then it wont be so bad. Actually the whole idea seems a little off for me, but then im sure Romero can pull it off again.

I'd actually like Romero to go into the whole radiation thing a bit more, maybe explain what happens to a zombie when it is completely decomposed, and how they managed to control them enough to build fortresses.

Im watching the Crazies tonight (another Romero little know zombie film) anyone seen it?
