So i tried to start up HL2 and it says update video card drivers blah blah so i do that restart my comp and there no sound not just in game doesnt work at all the game runs fine any ideas? please help

Try typing this in the console:
snd_restart
Oh, and type this too:
volume 1

Left-click on the Steam tray icon.
Select "Games".
Click on the "My Games" tab.
Right-click on "Half-Life 2".
Select "Properties".
Click on "Set launch Options".
Type in the window that popped up: -console.
Press ok and start the game.
