Hallo! Though I'm a new member, been browsing the site for some time. Lotta good stuff here, so I'm hoping to get some help. Anyways, down to business. If you haven't heard of or played it, there are a few objectives based maps floating around for dm, similar to the ctf conversions. Alas, said maps were released a year ago at the latest, as more of an experiment, and lack the details to be great; optimizing, team balance, skybox lol.

Point is, I've done a lot of work with the I/O system, and have this nailed down for the most part. I can create moving spawn ponits, objectives that can be captured/destroyed, and various flag escort stuff. My big issue now is time. At the rate I'm going, this will take many months. I am not asking someone to make a map for me. What I am asking is if a few ambitious people want to donate their time to speed this up. Building here, room there, etc. I have the mechanics, just a need a map to put them in. So thoughts, interest, or am I just fooling myself?

What kind of map are we thinking about? I coulld be interested.

How concrete are you on your gameplay mechanics? I've been tooling around with the deathmatch entities as well and I have some ideas that may go along with yours.

Unarmed- The kind of map I'm thinking about will essentially be a poor mans bf2. Example; Combine on offense, trying to destroy 4 power generators to bring down rebel shields. At the same time, there's a supply area that can be captured by both teams; whomever controls it gets extra ammo and sentry guns. After shields, must control an area for 5min, and so on. You get the idea. :E

JFry- I'm like 90% concrete on the actual mechanics to make this work. I can turn any prop into an objective to be captured or destroyed. I have ctf entities for 'push' gameplay; trading locations back and forth. Said entities can be substituted with teleports, effectively creating spawn points that change as the map progresses. There are a few extra things that I'm still figuring out however. If you know anything about the I/O system, would love to have another brain working on these. Course if you know any basic mapping, that would help too :P

Hehe. I was making objective maps before making objective maps was cool ;)

Hmmm... Sounds tempting to me although my contribution would only be in the mapping parts and not all the I/O bits.

But maybe I phrased my question wrong. I mean what kind of map is this supposed to be? C17 Coast? Facility? the general theme of the thing.

Ahhh. Well first off, the mapping bits are what I really really need right now. I have most of the I/O stuff completed. As for the setting, it's all in my doodle notebook right now :D But heres the picture I'm going with thus far;

First half is outdoors, mix of large buildings and hovels with 4 generators/turbines scattered around. These are the outside objectives (for now). A standard city mix, leading up to the citadel walls. A little courtyard and shield stands between the attackers and the inside of the citadel. Once inside... I actually don't have a good idea of how this part looks. Just halls and rooms going upwards for a few levels.

After that however, I'm currently working on recreating the last scene from single player, but a bit more elaborate. Have that city lights sky texture, that makes it look like you're really high up. A lot of criss-crossing walkways, only wide enough for one person. At the top are 2 large platforms that serve as the defenders final spawn. Theres a space in the middle large enough for that glowing orb thing with the floating shields on it. The one you had to blow up at the very end of single player. Possibly a few smaller circular platforms that loop around the whole area, wide enough to have an infinite rocket box.

I hope that gives you some idea of the picture I'm trying to make. I'm sure I could find a scanner and send you my hand-drawings if that would help.

How bout this...

For the next couple of three days I don't have a ton of free time, but once the weekend comes along there should be some.

Find a scanner and give me all you've got. The more the better. Add notes to everything, so that I know what it is that you want. And then I'll try to make a crude map over the weekend, something thats good enough for you to get the I/O stuff working and the we can both work on from there.

Sound good?

E-mail all the stuff to [email protected] and e-mail all that you can. If you are looking for a specific feel from HL2 then if you can, inlude screens and actual map name.

Oh most awsome. If I can't get my hands on a scanner at school tommorow, can definietly find one at the library (I would hope). Course now I need to redraw and make an index, cuz someone else actually has to read my chicken scratch shorthand :P I should emphasize that there is no particular hurry, just with some help this could be done in 1 month as opposed to 3-4.

Feel free to send me that stuff too when you get a chance. I'll pm you my email.

I like the idea for the level but I'm not clear on the top of the citadel part. Is that supposed to be another level or another part of the first one?

Also how would you feel about incorporating a weapons system of sorts? I was thinking about giving a team a starting inventory of say crowbar, pistol and grenade, and then giving them better weapons as they complete objectives. Rebels and Combine would each have seperate "tech trees".

Anyways as far as mapping goes I have a little bit of incomplete city type stuff I'm working on but it's not very city 17ish. I was wondering, do you have any brushwork done at this point or just entities?

Can do. I'm quite busy myself with school stuff and other chores, so nothing is really urgent. I have thought about the weapon system, to a degree. Like combine get ar2 and slams while rebels get shotty and nades. I have a handful of brushes done; I like to start on the border work to get a feel for the size. I'm technically 100% done with the I/O side, but there are some experimental things I want to add. Anyways, all help is much appreciated. I'm hoping a new gametype will put some energy back into the dm community, get people playing again. I should be able to have a scanner and send you my (very crude) hand drawing outlines tommorow, but the rest of my week is booked. So take your time, lord knows I am

Emails away! For the 3 people who have thus far expressed interest, I just sent out the vmf and pics. And long as I'm here.... bump :p
