Episode 1 was already released by EA.

So it worked fine, there isn't even an EA logo on the box.
 
What about it, that isn't news. EA is Valve's new publisher.
 
EA is more of a distributor than a publisher. Saying that a company is publishing a game makes it sound as though the company is giving money to the developer in order to assist in the game's development, that isn't the case here. Ergo why the EA logo isn't on the boxed version, EA didn't have any part in the creation of Half-Life 2: Episode 1.

EA still gets a small portion of the retail profits, I assume. But it's better than Valve releasing exclusively through Steam, as they still haven't integrated debit payment options.
