Here is what I found that is very strongly the basis for the concept of the hydra.

Here is the actual Hydra Bacteria:

As you can see it bares a similar resemblance to the hydra seen in the e3 video. Furthermore if one looked at the e3 video you could see its other parts. One of which looked very similar to this:

Only it was one tentacle thing. This is a colony of them.

Just found it interesting how Valve based it off of pre-existing species of terrestrial bacteria.

hmm..quite fascinating find.
it is really sad that they took it out.

Yes, that is the real hydra, but it's not a bacteria, it's a relative of jellyfish and anemones.

And the in-game hydra was a colonial organism, too.

Wow look at those tendrils in the first pic. If anyone has seen that concept pic of the hydra tentacle for HL2, they look almost identical, except for the giant impaling spike on the end

Actaully on a side not, if you ever see a sketch of a stinging cell of a jellyfish or other related organism, the thing they use to inject the venom, looks awfully similar to that spike on the hydra's impaling tendril. Cool stuff

WOW. thats pretty cool, id love to see loadz of the hydra's from the first pic, i could easily kill millions of them

Actually, the hydra kinda reminded me of the Tentacles in HL1. You know, the big-ass green bastard you only kill when you flick the switches.

Nematocysts, I think.

I see no pictures. I had to "quote" the thing to get the picture links, and now the website is down....

Romeo I know you said you had the code and it was working - when can you release?
