I don't really know what this does or looks like exactly; although, I've seen it. Could anyone post a side by side example of phone shading or direct me to one please?
 
Phong (formally known as rim-lighting) is a technique that gives character and weapon models a 'glossy' effect. The amount of gloss is determined in an exponent map, where black is matte and white is glossy. They usually coincide with a normal and specular map as the three combined provide the best results, otherwise you won't receive the best outcome possible.

how do you get phong shading in a mod ?
