I've downloaded "abandonware" before- technically, thats still piracy.

True abandonware is ok, the companies don't care because its the only way to see what they've done before. But a lot will call games just a few years old abandonware as an excuse for downloading things they could still buy.

Emulators and roms are the same kind of thing, people began abusing it and making downloadable roms of recent games and gave emulation a bad name and set Nintendo off on a crusade to kill off any site with Rom's on.

But you could download old speccy games quite legally, I doubt anyone would really care, cause they'll never ever see a penny from any sales for things that old, and its the _only_ way to see those games.

heh, the developers don't care... I'm sure someone like.. say.. EA or Vivendi would be quite annoyed at someone enjoying their product when they could make several cents off it (in EA's case, thats enough to hire 3 new developers and 1 new whip!)

True abandonware, the companies that distributed them often don't exist anymore. Many cases neither do the developers. And then you get the problem of nobody being allowed to sell it. Loom has a similar problem, only in that cases its not allowed to be abandonware properly neither. Lucasarts made the CD update available as abandonware, but you require the original game, and you can't get that anywhere really, cause the company that owned that went under or something and it was left in limbo, which is a shame cause it was like one of the greatest games that were ever made.

Besides, like was better back then, people did it for fun not for profits, these days its all about money, so yeah don't expect newer games to enjoy the same fate ancient titles have. Those days are long gone

I do, but it's a special circumstance - I don't have a DVD ROM (and I'm not about to go out and buy one just for games, I'm saving that to upgrade my piss-poor basic rig right now), so what I do for games that only come via DVD is get the bootleg copy and then go to the store and buy it. This way everyone's happy: I'm playing my game, the developers are getting their money, rah rah rah. Yeah, it's probably not entirely legal, but I think it's at least moral.

i dont think i'd pirate a game i'd been following for years,like for example if i had had a chance to get a pirated copy of hl2 or mgs3 i wouldnt coz i'd feel the devs deserved the cash,if it was ea or a game i was moderately interested in,hmmm another story but i've a download cap every month so its out of the question anyway

Actually its somewhat easier because you just have to d/l a hacked steam with a regular steam account
Then you can d/l w/e game straight from the valve servers
Which are a lot faster than most warez servers

im not proud of pirating games in the past. but i tell ya, it was an indescribable feeling of naughtiness and exhilaration when i first pirated a game(full version of doom from a BBS on a 14.4 modem, was just a kid then) after that i just got numb to it for quite a while which was really unfortunate

my friends are doing it all the time. they all have a pirated version of HL1 and CS.

But, there seems to be a lack of drive space in my hd, so i stopped

Yes, 'though i mostly download games that would be hell to try and find at my local gamestore. Fallout 2 for example (though i did purchase the damn thing when it came out, so i consider myself allowed to download it.)

which brings up another question, say you purchased a game (Fallou2 for example) some years ago, and then for one reason or another, you lost it. are you entitled to download it? ignoring the legel issues for now, is it moral? (i have no problem with it, but i wonder what everyone else thinks)
