Playing older games via LAN.

Well today me and my brother tried to play Red Alert 2 via LAN and it just doesn't work. Tried a whole bunch of things. I installed the 1st Decade pack with the 1.3 unofficial patch. The furthest i got was getting the game to even start a LAN game, but no one sees each others lobby.

One of the reasons i hate going back to old games but im really wanting to play ALL of the old command and conquers via LAN with my bro.

Oh ya and another game im trying to get to work is System Shock 2 coop.

What games have you guys got working using a LAN?

Im running Vista 64 and he is running XP SP3.

Have you tried Google? My brother and I wanted to play RA2 and TS LAN on XP. When it didn't work he Googled the problem and amazingly the internet contained a solution.

did u download RA2?? it wont work for the pirated shit i think, unless it's an image. tried it with my cousin and it just doesn't recognize anyone who's connected.

Sometimes it can be problematic as older games used either dated or out of use networking protocols. The internet is your best bet for a fix. If you can't find one try running Hamachi. I wonder if running an unofficial patch messed up the LAN somehow?

Weren't Westwood notorious for hanging onto one of the older protocols rather than TCP/IP?

Many old games use IPX as a LAN network protocal. Vista doesn't support IPX so I've found the best solution is to just use a Virtual Machine with like Win98 on it and give it access to your network card and use that for your old games.

for SS2 coop you need a patch or something...i remember trying it some time ago...forgot the details but it wasn't that hard to do.
