well a DVD Drive ain that expensive 20$ maybe go buy one
and I dont think you can use the CD Key without the DVD

You can 'register a product I already own' and download it.

I have the retail version and I downloaded it once, well a fair chunk of it...long story.

how do i download it....everytime it tells me to put the cd key use it...it tells me to put the cd in and go to auto run.....so ..how do i download it.. ? :flame:

You're not a noob for nothing, ha har eh ..ehar,

seriously I'm as stumped as you are.

just get a DVD drive man, that's the only frickin solution. Its gonna be, what, $30US?

I'd be seriously concerned that your PC isn't going to run HL2 if it's so old that you don't have a DVD drive...

Get a DVD drive or try to return the game in a store somewhere.

kupoartist: Many build their own computers nowadays and some don't tend to equip them with DVD drives.

OK You can do it this way... Onli U have to Dowload A LOT!!!

Open Steam->Browse Games->Register a product I already own->Putin the CD_key and WA LA You will start downloading 5 gigs worth of fun fun fun!!! ^_^

I think yours is probably the exception to the rule or something. Mind you, I haven't personally purchased a from the shop PC in 6 years so I wouldn't know what the latest strategies for ripping people off are....

I guess that is the only thing i can do......by the way as the dude said....my comp isnt old and doesnt have a dvd rom...i chose what it had in it 773ram

Wrong. Not everyone buys/builds a comp with a DVD drive. I don't have a DVD drive becaue I don't need one, though my second comp has one. But DVDs are very rare here, almost impossible to buy (poor selection), so I don't have the need for a drive, and I run HL2 very well.

On the other hand, you can buy a DVD drive cheaply, or you can download the game through Steam if you have a CD key.

He'll still need to install it before he can register the game so he can download it, my suggestion would be if the other computer has internet accessibility to install it to that computer & register the game, then download it via Steam.

I told a friend of mine to do the same thing and that was the only way it seemed to work out for him - he also didn't have a DVD-rom drive, but had the DVD version

You could also take it to a friend's & install Steam and the game to that computer, register it with your account, then delete it. ;)

My UK skew doesn't help admitadly. Certain games are DVD only now (HL2, Deus Ex 2, Thief III, Chronicles of Riddick for example), so that's seemingly what makes "Competant PC" Synonomous with "DVD Drive". Heh, I have two now - One reader, one writer. My PC would be far better off if I didn't have a puny 60GB HDD. Burning DVDs can get kind of boring :)
