The portal gun was included in a collection of mods for Quake 1 called the "Killer Quake Patch"

This mod included favorites such as:
-Cujo helper dog,Zeus Bots,Xena Flying Disc, 30+ skins (mostly horror / villians ), 40+ weapons (guided missles, vampire gun, auto-shotgun, etc etc )

The portal gun allowed you to throw up a working portal that would allow you to pass through a wall of a set thickness ( about 2-4 player widths i think was the setting )

http://retroquake.planetquake.gamespy.com/blog/?p=151

http://kqp.horoy.com/

from the kqp page:

"""

The Portal gun is a weapon that once fired upon any solid surface, will open a portal that allow one to WALK THROUGH.

This "weapon", or should I say equipment, gathers warp energy from its surrounding, and when enough warp power has been charged, it'll fire a beam of warp energy upon the solid surface you're facing.

If the surface you're firing at is not solid, (e.g. a door, or a openable wall, other movable objects, etc), the warp energy cannot focus and it will fail to open up a portal.

Otherwise, you'll see the warp energy focused on a spot, and in a short moment, depends on the thickness of the wall you've fired the Portal Gun upon, it'll open up a portal on it.

However, If the wall/surface is too thick or there is no exit on the other side of the wall/surface, the warp energy will not be strong enough to penatrate the surface and thus failed to open up a portal. The warp energy will focus for 5 seconds beforing failing to open the portal.

Once a portal has been opened, you may be able to pass through it, yet it the exit of the portal is blocked by some other solid object (e.g another surfact at an angle), you still cannot get through. An opened portal can last for 10 seconds.

Once you've fired the portal gun, you'll need to wait for it to recharge its warp power before you can use it again. Moreover, you cannot open more than one portal at a time.

Lastly, since the portal gun is a shotgun type weapon, even though it doesn't require any shells to fire, you'll need at least one shell before you could switch to the Portal Gun.

Yeah, and Far Cry copied its pistol from Half-life 2. This is me caring. *shrugs*

I haven't played that whatever drop game yet but that doesn't sound like how it works in that.

I'm sure Valve's version of the portal gun will be, shall we say, vastly more complex than the Q1 version. Who would've thought technology advances over time! :P

Correction: Far Cry copied its Pistol off the Counter-Strike Deagle :D

Difference between FarCry's Deagle and Half-life 2's USP

This is the point .
This is you o

o____________________________________________.
That is how much you missed the point

And you needed to tell us this why?

Are we suddenly meant to say "ZOMG ITS NOT A COMPLETELY ORIGINAL IDEA! I AM SHOCKED AND OUTRAGED AND WILL NOW BE BOYCOTTING VALVE!"

VALVe copied id by making a FPS shooter game, ohnoes!

Geez this is such a crap topic, ideas are copied/changed all the time.

The gravity gun is a copy of the doom 2 double barrelled shotgun, in the sense that they are both guns.. or.. at least wielded by the player.

When I read some pathetic press release that announces some "totally new" idea to the fps genre, it pisses me off.

i agree Valve will have a much more sophisticated delivery than this simple thing, nonetheless, It'd be nice for a website devoted to FPS's to acknowledge the presence of this idea before Valve thought it up. ( Same goes for giving credit to all the things Rise of the Triad did years before anyone else, yet not properly recognized for )

Sorry some of you weren't around for the earlier days of FPS's, you might apprieciate what mod makers ( like those from KQP ) did for the genre...( and therefore care a bit more about the post )

Erm... what you're talking about is different from what's being employed in Episode 2. There's more than walking through walls.

For the most part, and on any sane and practical plane of thought, it is "totally new".

The portal gun's based off of Narbacular Drop, not the Q1 portal gun. The portal gun from the KQP is basically a localized noclip; you fire the gun at a wall and you pass through it if the wall isn't too thick and you have somewhere to go on the other side.

What the portal gun from Portal is doing is you fire a portal at some distance from you, and then you set up another one close to you. You enter one and come out the other. It doesn't need walls or anything of that sort to function, and you can do a lot more with it, like placing portals vertically or horizontally, throwing things through one portal and have it come out the other side, etc. Completely different things.

Please research what you're talking about before you talk about it; it'll cut down on people flaming you, and even if you don't care about that it'll at least cut down on you getting pissed off for absolutely no reason.

Some idiot wrote 'omg they copied prey what idiots'... what an idiot.

Narbacular Drop was released at a time when the word 'Prey' would induce mockery and laughter.

Am I the only one who thinks a portal gun will be rubbish?

How so? I mean, these sort of things can go either way. It's all dependent on how well they're implemented and if the gameplay paradigm is of substance.

Valve are probably the only developer trying to do something interesting with their weapons. Gravity gun, portal gun, strider buster...pretty unique if you ask me, and not your usual weapons arsenal. Better than throwing in some M16 bullet-chugger.

dont forget snarks, SLAMs, a laser guided rocket launcher, that alien arm that shoots bees etc :P

The portal gun in Narbacular Drop (and I think it's safe to assume Portal will use something similar) does not have much in common with the Q1 mod you're talking about. In fact, it's as different as it could be while both weapons still create "portals". Unless you're claiming that the Q1 mod created the idea of "portals" then it's really not much of a precursor at all.

It's not like Valve are trying to pass this off as 100% original their idea, either. It's more like they're saying "some people made a cool minigame so we hired them to make a similar, cool, larger minigame".

noes i want ak47 lol

Though I agree that valve is not coping, they do seem to take an inspiration from other game's technologies, such as Far Cry's HDR and Prey's portals.

yea, the portals are preyesque (infinitely moreso than they are stolen from killer quake, wow), but 'far cry's hdr'? errr

HDR wasn't invented by Crytek and, haven't you read anything at all about Narbacular Drop?

Yes I know, HDR was inveted by God as it is a natural effect on the eyes.

All I am saying is that after Crytek released their HDR patches, Valve started talking about it. That tells me that they looked at it and thought "Wouldent that look good in our game" or somthing of that sort. Not saying they commited a crime, just jumped the bandwagon.

Valve released an HDR video for HL2 in August 2003. Don't tell me Far Cry 1.3 (had HDR) before August 2003.

ROFL. You can't take HDR from a game. HDR is a technology outside of games aswell you know :hmph:

Interesting, if no further research provides influence to the contrary, I retract my statment.

Looked more like bloom lighting though.

Yeah, there was an HL2 HDR video long before Far Cry came out. In fact, I think it was before HL2 even missed its 9/30/03 date.
There was talk of HDR soon after E3 2003, IIRC.
Notice my use of the word inspiration.
Valve wasn't "inspired" to add HDR. It was just the natural way forward for games. It's like saying bump-mapping is inspired from something :|

So what?

All design is based in inspiration. Inspiration is percieving old works of art/ideas that moves the mind to create new connections - new ideas. Making A and B into C.

An idea cannot come to its existance without influence of other ideas... it's called progress.

You must naturally assume for Valve to delevop new ideas, they have to base these ideas on inspiration that funnily enough comes from the world of multimedia (Which is similiar to their own field of work), such as video games and movies. It also comes from their own percieved reality aswell, else their games would never archieve a somewhat natural enviroment.

Ideas can be stolen, but it is not theft if it's further development of the ideas. To think of it as theft is plain stupid! It would result in the end of creativity and progress, and leave us with our current developed ideas for eternity.

That their portal idea has been used before is evident, but it looks like Valve have taken that as their inspiration and evolved it into a new kind of gameplay that was not percieved of earlier. They moved the concept forward!
