Portal Gun question

When you get the portal gun for the first time and making a entrance portal but don't have an exit portal what will happen when you try to go through it?

You can't enter it, probably.

Or you die in some kind of paradox.

I think you-dying is more likely... you'd expect an unconnected rip in space to have some sort of nasty effect when you walk into it.

i.e. You probably die

The Portal doesn't open. Duh.

Or you are kicked out.

Or maybe there are two portals open in each level by default like in Narbacular Drop.

For the first time you get the Portal gun, the exit portals are automatically placed and you can only make one portal.

It builds on that and then eventually you get to place both portals.

Prior to you picking up the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, (Just typing that name makes me feel hyped), there are portals open.
