A cure for blindness is the breakthrough every scientist working in the field of opthalmology dreams about. Now, a team of gene therapy researchers at Moorfields Hospital may be on the brink. By Jeremy Laurance
Published: 02 May 2007
British scientists have claimed a world first for a new form of gene therapy that could help the blind to see.

Specialists at University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital are testing the revolutionary treatment on 12 patients, who are aged between eight and their mid-20s, and have an inherited eye disorder.

The technique has already been shown to work in animals affected by the same disorder, called inherited retinal degeneration, and their sight was restored after treatment........

Great! I think blindness is one of the worst things possible, and we may curew it soon. xD

Aha! Take THAT, outside world! Now I can keep sitting inside watching a screen and going blind! \:D/

:D

The future is bright for mankind, I just know it.

it only works for a specific, inhereted blindness, and requires gene therapy (read: very difficult).

Blindness must be horrid. Imagine not seeing the world...

imagine not being able to tell if you haven't wiped your ass enough after shitting

What the hell is your point, theotherguy?

It's not a "cure for blindness". It's a "cure" for a very specific genetic disease requiring an immensely difficult technique. This does not mean everyone who is blind takes a pill and gets vision,it means only people with this specific genetic disease get gene therapy to cure it. People who have auto-immune or physical blindness (more common than this) will not benifit from treatment.

Dream wrecker.

Spoilsport. In a few years we'll just give those others bionic eyes. Wouldn't surprise me if bionic eyes caught up with our own in a few decades, it has a lot of potential. Being able to see a much wider spectrum than our own eyes.

And seeing through clothing. God, the revenue from Japan alone would make me richer than Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and the Google Guys combined.

Well, you wouldn't really be richer than Bill Gates as he has no soul. All he has is a big ball composed of the rests of companies that have been "bought out", combined with the crustated tears of small children.

Anyway, blindness is the most horrible disease I know. AIDS, etc aside, it is the most horrible thing.

I'm sure a blind person would disagree with it being one of the worst diseases. It isn't life threatening, it doesn't hurt and they usually benefit from much better hearing and touch. Imagine being able to see only what you imagined, seeing the world as you would like it to be.

As you can see from my mug here, you all are years behind

I'd rather have an extra sense or too.

Or have the ability to plug data from the pc into by brain.
