Possible Half-Life Conclusion?

Remember how the G-man was talking about time? Well I think it would fit right in if the G-man sent Gordon back in time before the events in Black Mesa to go destroy the combine and the advisor. Then it ends with you back at Black Mesa before the test chamber. You go to do the test until everybody realizes that "somebody" took the test sample. Thus, preventing the Cascade and the 7 hour war and utterly the destruction of earth and humanity.
That would be a bitter-sweet ending to the entire HL series.

yes, that would be interesting, but how would it play out. Ostensibly the goal would be to attain the test sample, but, there would be no one to fight. who would you kill, the security guards (BARNEY?) a few marines and an apache. Remember, the beggining of HL1 was very peaceful, no people runnig around trying to stop gordon from the future from reaching the sample. No, no, it couldn't work in the HL universe. HL3 will take place int he future from HL2, its inevitable.

What I meant is that after you defeat the combine and return to the Black Mesa Facility. It all just ends in a peacful tone, similar to HL1. Assuming that somebody else (possibly the G-Man? or his boss?) took the test sample.

it could happen...wouldnt, but could..where the combine could also send people back to prevent u from changing the past, but it all happens around hl1's starting events at the end of hl3..so the whole game wouldnt be running around bm. u would be fighting 1 step behind ur past self...would be interesting if it was u causing the consoles and stuff to explode in the original half lifes openin sequence...again extremely unlikely to the point where it'd never ever happen

The problem with having it be all about time travel/manipulation is, even if we avoid some of the paradox pitfalls, why wouldn't someone else just send someone to give the sample back? Then you'd have to go back to take it away, then they'd send someone back to kill you as a child, then G-man would send someone back to protect you as a child. Then someone would send someone back to kill G-man as a child...

Well, you can see where that's going. As soon as the game says it's possible to travel backwards and influence future events then all the gamers of the world are left asking "Well what if this happened?

Time travel is trash. Maybe G-Man (and his race) can foresee the future and use people like Gordon and Adrian at specific timespans to make a lot of difference, of course, G-Man also interfere personally, probably setting up the best scheme to ensure that his "pawns" complete the job.

Or maybe G-Man cannot see the future, but only holds Gordon and Adrian until he thinks it's the best time, and then he "unleash" them.

From what I see, the G-Man behavior is not only "sit and watch" he does a lot of things and talk to a lot of people throughout the game, maybe he's playing his part to ensure that Gordon and Adrian do what he wants them to do, but he's not sure if they'll survive or not. Remember, he can teleport to anywhere, maybe it's why everything is set up so perfectly when Gordon arrives to certain locations.

He uses this "ability" to teleport and "slow-time" to act like a "builder" of facts while they are happening, I don't believe he goes "backwards" in time, since if he could, everything could be much more easier for him. And maybe the Combine has a way to prevent him from using his abilities when he's on their domains. After all, we never see the G-Man wandering on Xen or the Citadel (we do see him on the end of HL2, but that's only after the "dark fusion reactor" and Breen, are out of the way, also we see him on Xen at the end of HL1, but only after the Nihilant is killed)

edit: I'd like to point out, that G-Man is working against the Combine because some other "race" bought his services in a way that the Combine could not. Maybe he was just like Gordon, and then succeed in so many endeavors, that now he's a major player, and not just a pawn, but still an employee for some greater "mystery".

if that was G-man's objective (to send Gordon back in time and stop resonance cascade and all that followed) why didn't he do it after HL1 or instead of sending Gordon to City 17 on a potentially deadly mission? wouldn't that be easier?

so my point is that G-man isn't able to move back in time, just switch dimensions thus altering the flow of time for Freeman or anyone involved. that's why Gordon woke up after 10 years, but for him it could be only an instant.

there's also other possibility.
once the resonance cascade uleashed the portal storm and everything after our timeline and universe changed (combine invasion, humanity enslavement etc.).
by going back in time and stopping BM test chamber accident Gordon would of course stop all the terrible things that happened after, but in ANOTHER timeline and ANOTHER universe. the people of City 17 would still be under Combine rule, Breen would still be it's administrator and so on...

by altering past you can change future, but ANOTHER future.

The G-man's objective is to recruit a valuable employee whom he can pimp out when somebody needs a resourceful triggerman. Gordon's objective is to clean up the mess he made and save Earth, or what's left of it. Both of them need to be satisfied because G-man could obviously squash Gordon like a bug, while Gordon would probably pull a sit-down strike if G-man dropped him in a situation he didn't care about.

well.. it's pretty clear, that hl1 MUST have happened BEFORE hl2.. hence the pics in the lab (only thing, eli could save from black mesa.. well.. and alyx of course.. heh)..

Heh. T2 is actually in my list of top 10 favorite movies; number 6 I think. Because it's self contained and the movie isn't about time travel (it just has time travel in it); it's forgiveable because it just says "This is what happens with time travel the way we're using it and we won't get into details."

What about if somebody wanted to conquer Xen. I think g-man (or his boss) have something to gain from Xen (a special material that is only on Xen).

Another possibility is that you might need to destroy combine for the good of many aliens and humans that were under the control of the combine. You save the galaxy or something like that.

This is an interesting point. In this case, it would make more sense that the Gman is the only one from his "group" that you talk to. He has been through similar experiances, therefore he is the perfect person to brief him on his next "mission". Add just the right mystery here and pressure there to generate motavation for Gordon.

As for time travel, I don't believe that the Gman can time travel toward the past or the future. What I DO think is that the Gman can engage in interdimensional travel (Personally, I believe that his briefcase is the device he uses to travel and teleport). Now, instead of thinking of time as another dimension, think of it as a natural "flow" of the universe. Think water flowing in a river. I think that the Gman steps through dimensions to parts where time may "flow" more slowly, just as water flows more slowly toward the banks of a river. In Gordons case at the end of HL1 (and HL2?), 10 years flew by in a matter of hours (minutes/days?), just as water flows fastest in the middle of the river.

I think he has the ability to manipulate the speed at which time takes place. Which is a gimme since he keeps you in a slow time warp.

at that portal near the end of HL1, I did not at all get the impression that those voices were coming from the portal. I thought it was meant to convey a little suspense before the final boss battle, possibly gordon replaying memories in his head, possibly nihilanth probing gordon's mind, trying to spook him out... if the voices were coming from the portal, then it should be noise from a single instance earlier in time, but instead it was a mix of a bunch of different scientist statements.

To me, that's like listening to a recording of a friend from a few days ago and thinking that his voice has time traveled right out of the speakers.

And even more than that, if the voice were coming from the portal, that doesn't mean time travel at all - it could have entered a slow time warp, been put into stasis for a few days, then popped out at gordon. If flesh and blood can be put into stasis why can't sound waves?

The portal doesn't indicate backwards time travel. When you enter the portal, you do not go backwards in time. If anything, the voices are time-travelling from the past to the present, in other wards forward time-travel. Backwards time-travel would mean that you'd hear voices before the event that caused them (like if you heard the g-man's end-of-game speech during the resonance cascade, the sound would be travelling backwards through time).

So where again is the backwards time-travel evidence?

Backwards time travel doesn't make sense for going to Xen in HL1. That would mean you take down Nihilanth not long after the whole mess started. Which means that the scientist would be sending you back to kill him after you've already killed him. Which doesn't make sense.

Personally I would be very interested to see an ending where it turns out that Gordon is somehow responsible/indirectly responsible for bringing back that rock thing from the combine universe, which was experimented upon in HL1 thereby opening the rift between earth and the combine world.
