I have a problem getting HL2 to work. When i try to launch the game from Steam it will say "Launching Half Life 2" then the screen goes black, then goes right back to the desktop with nothing changed. If anyone can tell me what might be wrong please post. =D

What are your system specifications? (Tutorial can be found here : Link)

i had a problem much like this, with out the black screen of corse. turned out i need to update my video card driver and my directX to 9.0c. when you install HL2 only looks if you have directX 9, turned out i had 9.0b. i upgraded and Wala= i was up to my neck in good Half-life 2 excitment and fun!

System is Pentium 4 3.00GHz, Radeon 9800, 1.5 gig of ram, and i think i have some sort of direct x 9.0

now, i aint the smartes guy on the planet most would agree, however, it looks like your comp is more then qualified to do the job, i dont know about the graphics card just cuz... well i dont know... i asume its good, its got a cool name so its gotta be good right? anyway... to find out what kinda directX you have, click start and go to run, in the text box type in "dxdiag" it will tell you all your comp specs. I dont know about yours but it says at the very bottom i think what directX i have. This I dont belive will tell you your driver software version, Make sure you get that up-to-date, thats important.

Ummm when i type in "dxdaig" in "Run" it says that i typed something in wrong...

then make sure you have an updated video card driver. other than that i really dont know what to tell you. Im useing a Nvidia Geforce so i dont know where you'd go for a Radeon... or maybe it doesnt matter... Nvidia just makes video card software... hell give it shot... i really dont know anymore... they might work for your card... but try look'n up an up to date drivers for specific card.

thats right... i said it... for only like... the bajillionth time!... your grafics card came with software right? see if the company that made the software for your card has a site and check if it has any updates... if this doesnt solve the problem then I dont know what more i can do to help you, well... i could sit around and ask you stupid questions to which you've already thought of...
