Steam doesn't want to start for me. So at first I thought my account was hijacked since I had it set to auto-login. I decided to uninstall then reinstall Steam and it appeared to update but then just stops and does nothing. I can't seem to get it to start still which leads me to believe my account is safe. Can anyone help me?

Sounds like perhaps it's being blocked by a firewall. Have you investigated this yet?

It wasn't, because I have no fire wall. A friend helped me fix it. I ended up having to take a few files out of the steam folder and put it on my desktop then restarting steam which replaced those files. Then I simply deleted the files.

I tried, either I can't remember the file names or they aren't there.

How long have you left it while it just runs and does nothing? I've had it invisible, appearing to do nothing for minutes at a time sometimes when it is doing something obscure in relation to an update.

When you say 'appeared to update but stopped', what do you mean? Was there a progress bar that froze, or what?

EDIT: hang on, you just made another thread saying that you're playing HL2. You're using some shitty hacked pirate version, stop wasting our time with your problems.

WTF???? I'm not using a pirated version. That glitch happened a few weeks ago. The game updated then it disappeared and nothing happened. Now when I try and open Steam it just runs in the background. I will try what you said and leave it for a few hours.

Yeh, same thing happened to me. And I just bought the game yesterday. I downloaded everything, and when I tried to start the game (through the desktop shortcut) nothing happened. I've reinstalled both steam and HL2 but it didn't help at all. Steam is running in the background at about 17800 K but it doesn't do anything. I've even inserted the disk and had the HL2 window come up asking all the stuff ("Play Half-Life 2", "Modify Half-Life 2 Installation", "Visit the Half-Life 2 Website"...etc.), but when I click "Play Half-Life 2" it doesn't even act like I pressed it. Can anybody help with this?

@Nipples - Okay. If that doesn't work then I dunno what's wrong with your copy of Steam. There's no reason that uninstalling and then reinstalling shouldn't work.

Maybe try running the 'Steam Background Programs Interference Test' or whatever by clicking steam://support/?Issues=Background*. No, I didn't know this existed either...

I fixed it. I had to remove three files from the steam folder and put them on the desktop. Those being ClientRegistry.blob, Steam.dll, and SteamUI.dll. Oobligooch try this. Find them in c:\Program Files\Valve\Steam, or C:\Program Files\Steam. It should work.

Yeah, thank god that I had a steam friends aim and they were able to help me through this. He had the same thing happen, though I'm not quite sure how he knew what to do.
