(I realize I have a previous thread, which is now wiped from the board listing, but most of the photos featured there are now gone, creating a big mess.)

I'd like to share some photos with you all. Critiques and comments are always welcome. If you have a critique, always provide constructive criticism; I'll never earn without advice! This group of pictures I went with gut instinct. Sometimes I use the rule of thirds, sometimes I think it looks better centered. Thanks!

Make a note that these were taken with a Canon SD300, a point and shoot camera, so focusing correctly is a pain.

OK first off regarding the ever mentioned rule of thirds, if you have an artistic eye you don't need that dumb rule. Alright, the pics are good just that a few of the macro shots seem to have poor quality, but since you say this is a simple point and shoot camera i guess that couldn't be helped. The last picture with the white flower needs some contrast and brightness adjustments.
Pictures 6, 7 and 8 are the best

Yeah, I noticed the problem with the last picture as I posted. I'm currently doing adjustments with all of the pictures so I'll update it soon. Thanks!

Too much DOF tbh.

Needs moar fowcus.

PLAY WITH THE FSTOP MMKAY?

Although I did order a Canon S3 IS, and it'll be here on Thursday. Expect a lot more pictures then.

What those pictures were taken with: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=10599. Yes, I simple snapshot/party camera.

I borrowed one of my friends' girlfriend's film SLR camera today. She was taking pictures for a class. This thing is so solid. I hope my S3 IS is half as built as this camera.

Thanks for the comments!

Buy a normal lense for it. Will give you the best shots evar.

I dunno about digi cams, but when it comes to film cams, the body itself is really just a lightproof box.

The real quality is all in the lenses.

That's assuming you don't need a camera that could survive a nuclear blast.

Just treat it like a block of gold and buy a high quality lense (cough NORMAL LENSE cough), and it'll take pictures just as well as any 100,000 dollar camera.

Well I borrowed it for the night. Mainly I wanted to borrow it because the body is almost identical to the S3 IS.

I like the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th the best. Aside from the "too much DOF" and "more contrast" comments, which you've already talked about, I got nothin. Then again I woke up sick today so I'll probably give proper criticism another shot in a couple days.

Good stuff though. I made the 5th one my desktop background :D

I got my S3 IS today. I'm wholly impressed by this camera. It's so robust, yet still (surprisingly) compact enough so it doesn't feel like a midget is hangin' fo' yo' necklace. I'm still learning stuff.

Here's one snap I took today when I walked down to the lake (top-down shot of a small waterfall). I thought it was nice. More to come.

Thanks!

Some more to come.

EDIT: Took a walk down to the beach today. There was no one there considering it's too cold to swim.

Your latest set is pure secks.

I really should get back into photography :(

Don't have the time or money to book darkroom time or even buy spools of film anymore though. Should prolly just get a nice point and click digi-cam.

What are you shooting with qonfy?

EDIT: NVM, SD 3000 :P

I'm a nikon whore though :(

I really, really like the last two. In the first one, I personally would have picked a lower POV, just because the way it is seems like a very offhand "Oh hey, look, it's a beach" kind of picture.

I also lol a bit when I look at the seal in the last picture, because I look at its smile and imagine it saying "LULS AM IN PICTAR"

The first set of pictures were with an SD300, a small snapshot camera.

The last set was with my NEW camera, my Canon S3 IS. I love it so much.

I understand about the first picture, and you're right.

I am recommends you what I recommends every person who purchases a DSLR.

Purchase a good book on Film Photography, so you can learn the basic concepts behind film photography.

Then you can know what your camera is basically emulating, and thusly gain more control over your shots :)

It's not a DSLR.

;(

DSLR-like.

My wallet =/= DSLR.

EDIT: Went to a nearby dam after going out to eat for Mother's Day. Theses definitely aren't my best, but I think they're post worthy. On my counter, I've already passed to 400th picture mark. Wow.

all of 'em are quite awesome, but where are the nude pics? D:

They're all pretty nice, actually. I think you should go on a really artistic bent though, start taking pictures at different angles, line things up, different POVs, I dunno. Something more experimental.

But so far a few of your pictures have been desktop-worthy, so you probably don't need to fix what's not broken.

I'll have to post some of my pics sometime, but first I'll have to get a photobucket thingy.

beautiful pictures, keep them coming. Why can't I live where you live :(

Very nice. I've witnessed teh sechs in person. Your old camera was very nice, but your new one takes some truly amazing photos for $300. The pictures are extremely nice, well done.

Last three photos are most amazing, really great job!

All the better :)

DSLRs are a waste of money, overly complicated, overpriced for what they do, and just all around ghey imo.

You sure have a unique niche in photography. Good work, Trav.

Some of these are pretty nice, but others seem like depth of field is being used just for the sake of depth of field.

Thanks for the comments guys; I'm going to be leaving for the weekend so I'll get those full-sized ones for you later, Beerdude. I'm going to be snapping a few while I'm gone so hopefully I can salvage a few good ones.

And yeah, Glo-Boy, some of those pictures are just me messing around with blurring the background. I try not to over do it.

good graphics man. You guys are young enough that games may look like that before all is said and done. :D

I like the radio flyer ones, especially the way the light looks on image number two. The new camera has much better quality, but I think I was more interested in the abstract images rather than the ultimate epic beach shot. I still captured them to view later.

Good work.

I have all of my photos on Flickr and I post some collections on The Photo Forum. I took some this weekend, so I'll have those up and running in a few. I'm getting tired of taking pictures of trees, flowers and wildlife; I don't have much of a choice though as that's what's all around me. I kind of get discouraged because it gets uninteresting to me. Meh. I'm itching to get some people shots; buildings or something different.

Beerdude: I don't have the larger one for the purple flower, just the resized/bordered one. Good news; I do have the fulls for the other two. I did have to resize the geese one to 2000x (from 2800x), though. Here.

New ones from down-state (warning: lots of green):
