Not sure if I should ask this here but i'll give it a go. What version of directX is best. Should I use 9 or like should I be using a version of 8 and get a patch? Which version looks the best and do I need the patch if I use 9?

9 looks the best. You can only use it if your video card supports it; HL2 usually sets to the highest your video card can support by default (it chooses from 7, 8, 8.1 and 9). You'd need a new video card if you want to go higher (9 is the max).

post your specs
"They said to play it louder than hell, We promised that we would.."

ALWAYS upgrade to the latest version of DirectX, as there is no reason not to. Each version is completely bug-free, and only adds more features. Plus, DX9 will work on ANY video card since it's completely backwards compatible*.

*You just won't be able to use some graphical features, but any good project, e.g. HL2, should have fallbacks for older hardware (inlcuding a dialog box saying "Uhuh, your video card sucks. No game for you!")

DirectX 8.1 with the water reflection patch looks practically (not identical, but almost) the same as DirectX 9.
