i have a few questions about this amazing enemy/friend (in diff. cases)

1. is the hydra still in the game?
2. if it isn't, how did we know it got taken out?
3. can we still use it in mods (like the bats and such in worldcraft that weren't in HL1)

I certainly hope that it stayed in the game.. mysterious creature..

1. No.
2. A VAVLe employee said so.
3. I doubt it.
4. Why did you use pink?? Are you gay?

GAH! What is with the pink text!? It feels like your ****ing my eyes!

Cliffe confirmed that it was removed. The hydra sequence only worked when heavily scripted, which makes it unbelievable if the player tries to interfere.

I'm sure it could me modded in though. The did leave hydra files in the distribution.

And yes, that pink is obnoxious.

whoa, dude, i love pink as much as the next guy, but it's REALLY hard to read!

Unless that next guy is a metrosexual I would assume that is none.

Someone was dicussing the possibility of it making it into HL3.

I'm glad personally. It was a neat creature, but it would probably have had lackluster combat.

you can do what ever you want in mods... you could make a 3 headed hydra that spits mcdonalds toys at you while trying to mark its terratory all at once.

if you learn about half life modding you'll learn that you may create new models, such as guns and people and animals, what ever you want.

mods have total freedom over the content.

it sucks they took it out. i would have just jumped in the water and kicked it in the throat. that'd teach it...

would have just jumped in the water and kicked it in the throat

now it better be in the game, that would be a kodak moment.

"stupid hydra, die!" *kicks in throat*.... *looks around*.... "crap"

OH Crap!!!!

they took that thing out?

seriously, this sucks...that was one of the coolest looking things in the demo...

damn,I really am pissed that isn't going to be in the game...
and what's this about it was too much scripting to get it to work?
I could personally care less if it was scripted or not...
half of the game is apparently scripted for god's sakes...

yeah, what's wrong with black? john are you...*gasp*...TEXTIST?

Damn it was removed :( Oh well dont care really.

Can't remember what the Hydra is? Someone tell me...

the one with the *fwooosh fwooosh* *BANG!* and the blue sticky the guy in the back and OW! yeah...that one

Just because he used pink text, you assumed he was gay? That's pretty pathetic.

I'm gay, and I've never used pink text.

yeah...and i'm NOT gay, and my favorite shirt is pink! come on, dude!

...it is annoying to read, though...

God half the posts in here are irrelevant because he decided to use pink text?

Wow!

Ahem...

It's too bad they cut the Hydra... But if Valve did it, it's the right choice. :)

Here's a situation where Valve is damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they left it in:
Man HL2 sux!! It's totally scripted!! AI my ass. Could the hydra sequence BE any more scripted?!?!

If they took it out:
Man Hl2 sux!! They took out the Hydra!! WTF?! That thing was the coolest! Did you see how if skewered that combine dude? That rox!!!1

Personally, i'm all for more AI and less scripting (to a point).

Maybe the answer is not to show the super cool eye candy video before game design features are locked.

HL2 is a linear, scripted game. That is not the reason it was removed, f|uke just pulled that out of his proverbial ass. We don't know why it was removed, but in my opinion it's a damn shame.

Errr.. HL2 being a linear game has nothing to do with coding a Hydra so that it reacts to you and what you do realistically.

It would be REALLY DIFFICULT to make it look like he was attacking you, some kind of dynamic animation technology.. I don't know much about it.

HL's story is scripted, but I don't think the action is supposed to be. I have a feeling almost nothing from the original E3 demo will be in the actual game, at least not in recognizable form. Not a single part of the original Doom 3 E3 presentation was actually in the game.

I think most developers make fake demonstrations using heavy scripting to show what they anticipate the game will be like when it's finished. In the leaked HL2 E3 demo, the door that the soldier kicks in would get "kicked in" even if you kill the soldier beforehand. Also, in Kleiner's lab, nothing happens after the Strider blows out the wall (Where it fades to black). There wasnt even anything BEHIND the strider, just a white background. All of that was created for show, to demostrate what Valve was hoping the game would be like once it was finished.

Where did Cliffe say this? Anyone got a cite?

The reason I cited was speculative. Still I did not say specifically thats why it had been removed. Perhaps I misspoke, but my logic there was sound.

Character interaction is not fully scripted. Enemys must have the opportunity to react to player actions so that they can appear intelligent. This is a real issue when walking up to a combine solder, gun in hand, and having him stand in one place so that he can be impaled by the hydra. This may not be the reason cited in Raising the Bar, but it certainly poses a real problem, and time will tell what the book says.

Play nice, now, elephant. You dont want to be banned again.

Not to mention, it wouldn't be long before the hentai fans started making tentacle porn with Alyx.

Why on earth would I want to have the Hydra back again? As far as I'm concerned, the fewer Xen enemies I encounter, the better.

This is Half Life 2, not Half Life rehashed. If they cut the hydra for something cooler, then more power to them.

With the hydra, it's been there, done that, got the crowbar.

Tentacle porn... good one. I frankly dont care if the Hydra is there or not, i just hope the game is good... But now im just looking forward to november the 1., when i get my GTA:SA game :)

the hydra would be cool since it is a monster (other then the strider) that is completely controlled by physics and has no scripted animations

that bites, it would have been really cool. as for interfering, it was killing a combine, i wouldn't have interfered.
