Have any of you traveled on those Greyhound buses?

Is it safe?
Was it overall a comfortable experience?

I'm sure they're safe. Greyhound buses usually travel between cities and states if I'm not mistaken. It's not like you're going to be stuck with the dregs of society on a bus trip they can't pay for.

City buses are another story.

I've never heard of a Greyhound bus. You should really have put a random fourth choice for people like me who feel compelled to vote in every poll.

They're popular, I think.
In the US, anyway O:

Greyhounds are safe, my cousin travels to and fro from Stephenville to Eagle Piss when he comes on vacations.

Besides greyhounds, what are your other options?

AMTRAK (train)
But there aren't any stations where I'm planning to go.

Isn't your boyfriend the one traveling though? Maybe he can ride the bus.

I've ridden one a time or two, should be safe, though there can be some characters. Try to go at an off time like early or really late to possibly avoid a totally packed bus.

It's more comfortable than a city bus, for sure. Better seats and a bathroom...

Greyhound buses are great. Comfortable seating, a bathroom, and not very expensive. I rarely ever need to take a Greyhound, but when I do it's actually enjoyable.

Ride a Greyhound bus and THIS COULD BE YOU.

Note, this is not a greyhound bus.

OMG, is that that bus of old folks during the Rita evacuation? That was so awful ;(

Umm... I don't know. It was just an image of a bus off Flickr or something of a bus that was on fire. It said the bus caught fire.

EDIT: No, certainly not. I wouldn't post an image of a bus where people burned to death. I found pictures of that bus, and that bus is like... a skeleton. :( That bus exploded, this bus looks like a slow fire.

Yeah, I guess it was supposed to have started from somebody's oxygen tank, just horrible. Tragically they didn't even really need to leave...

I'm glad I stayed put.

Anyway, yeah, buses should be safe....

Thanks a lot, people.
I'm feeling more confident now 8D

QFT. A perfect way to get up to Tamagami :)

Same here. I have a car, so I dont use public transportation much, but on school trips and such ive been on one several time. They're really comfortable, and some have tv screens even. Even on several hour trips, i found them to be very nice.

Hey man... after being packed into a van with 8 other people and all our luggage for two weeks on a trip from Texas to California non stop(except for bathroom breaks and sandwiches during gas stops), I'd find myself comfortable in any motor vehicle where I have at least five inches of space on either side of me.

I've been seeing some commercials about how Greyhound buses and stations are getting overhauls as well, to make the experience better.

And besides, who's not safe on a bus? It's a bus. I really can't understand comments like:

City buses are another story.

I've always felt safe riding the bus. And I've ridden buses in cities from LA to Oakland. What's not safe about riding the bus? People are just scared unnecessarily, that's all. Stop being pusses and ride the ****ing bus, nobody's going to gank you, and it helps the environment a little. Cuts down on fuel and all that.

Just because you've been on bus rides that have been fine and dandy, doesn't mean they can't be dangerous.

We've had a rash of incidents where youth gangs have harassed DART bus travelers and even assaulted them.

So............ you suck.

http://cbs11tv.com/investigators/2.492254.html

An examination of public records and interviews with 19 police officers show that DART has become a battle ground for roving gangs of youths who intimidate and assault passengers, disturb the peace and sometimes commit heinous crimes. Gangs of kids take over rail cars and savage them with rocks and fists. Alternative school children, whose passes are paid for by the Dallas Independent School District, fight turf wars on moving trains and at stations. Youths have terrorized the elderly, sick and weak, according to records backed by interviews with passengers and police.

I haven't personally experienced it, since I've only been on the DART buses a few times, but I've heard people talk about incidents.

Yeah, I take the bus up to Manhattan every time I go there. It's only an hour and a half away, but I'd rather microwave my head than drive in the city.

If gang members are going to harass people they're going to do it whenever and wherever they can. I'm not saying bad stuff doesn't happen on buses, but f*ck those people; if I'm going to ride the bus I'mma ride the bus.

If someone wants to tumble with me they can try it. I'm just there to ride the bus. Having an attitude like, "city buses aren't safe because of gang members" is just letting fear dictate how you go about your day. If you don't ride the bus normally, that's fine for you, but if you DO ride the bus often, hey, I'm not going to stop my routine because of punkass kids with "rocks and fists." I got fists too.

When did I say you shouldn't ride the bus? I like the Dart buses. They have nice seats, a nice system, generally pleasant bus drivers, a neat system of getting day passes without interacting with the driver(for obvious reasons). The only negative things I have seen in my trips has been the super long as times it takes to get from point a to point b. It can take me an hour to travel 9 miles on the bus systems... And that equates to two hours each day on the bus just that distance alone if I had to take the bus(which I have had to do on a number of occasions when I worked at the Zales national headquarters down in Irving.

I'm just saying, you have to be naive to think city buses are always going to be safe. You never know when there might be a scuffle on the bus, and especially in cities with really serious gang problems(Dallas being quite light in comparison), you don't know what kind of people will be riding with you. Safety is not always guaranteed.

Also. I must say if you'd be willing to throw yourself into a fight with a bunch of youth gang members if they are harassing you on a bus, you're a fool. You never know when one of them will have a knife or a club and assault you with it, backed up by their friends with support and numbers. You don't know if you're dealing with kids who have more bark than bite, or kids who will really **** you up or kill you. You just never know, so don't throw out that macho "if they wanna fight, I'll **** them up" bullshit.

If you ride the bus, why're you arguing with me about riding the bus?

I've said I always felt safe riding the bus. And I used to ride the bus every day for years. Telling me "don't be naive to the dangers." I rode the bus in Oakland for years. I've never been to Dallas, you said it's a light place for gangs; OAKLAND IS NOT. But nonetheless I've always felt safe using public transport, buses and the BART (that's the rail line in the Bay Area). I know people get harassed sometimes--I think I remember someone getting stabbed on the BART being in the news--but I still feel safe using them. In LA too, I ride the bus when I'm down there. That's my means of travel. So I'm not being naive to the dangers of it.

Also, don't call me a fool because of the way I act or think, Raz. I'm not just saying, "macho bullshit" just to say it--I say that kind of thing because honestly, I hate kids like that and if they started something with me and I'm not bothering them, and I can't get out of an altercation, I'm not going to just sit there and be harassed. What's macho about that? Because I'm going to stand up for myself on a bus, or anywhere? Don't call me a fool for that, dude. I don't know if you were just saying something because you thought maybe I was calling you personally a puss for not riding the bus--I wasn't--but hey. I'm far from oblivious to the dangers of dealing with gangs, but I still don't take shit from people.

Well obviously if you can't get out of a situation you do something about it rather than let them do it to you unhindered. But the way you worded it, it sounded like you'd invite any ruffians to a fight which might in all likelihoods end up being seriously dangerous.

If you invite a fight of course you're going to get into one. If you mind your own business people generally leave you alone.

Which is why MOST of the time people are safe on the bus. But sometimes you get involved against your will. Something you obviously can encounter on any method of public transportation, but still I believe the chances are increased in inner city environments, especially in cities where there is significant gang presence by ultra violent gangs.

Heh. My first time on the DART bus system. This shady looking guy walked on the bus. He looked unkempt and his clothes were paint speckled and stuff. He sat in the front near me shortly before setting his HUGE duffel bag in his place and getting off the bus.

I was thinking. "Oh ****". Because this duffel bag was absolutely huge and bulky, filled to the brim with objects inside, and this guy was in a hurry to get off the bus. I didn't know what to think.

But the guy eventually came back on(after a smoking apparently waiting for the buses to leave) and we eventually got off at the bus transfer station and on the same next bus and chatted a bit before I got off at my stop.

His duffel bag was his equipment, and he worked as a sandblaster.

In the end I voted for "Only as a last resort", but it would have to be one hell of a last resort to get me to fly to America just to catch a bus.

Oh wait... I forgot what thread we're dealing with here.

Must...vote...can't...resist.

Ahhh. :smoking:
