Quick retail CD Key question to make sure everything is cool

This might seem rather "n00bish", but I just want to make sure I have everything covered since no one is going to be around when HL2 is actually released.

I bought the retail HL2 and I'm sure the numbers on the back of the CD1 holder is the key correct? And when I try to put in the key for steam it says it's invalid because HL2 has not been unlocked yet right? I mean, that's where I'm SUPPOSED to get stuck right now, yes? Thanks.

yeah.. because HL2 is locked for now, u cannot proceed but once it is unlocked u shouldn't have any problems

No, it should not say invalid! I put mine in. It should register and then say that you can play as soon as the game is unlocked.

i'm pretty sure the CD-Key is not behind but inside the dvd-case on a white sticker in the upper-right corner where is the dvd...

Oh wow, I'm an idiot. My fault.I put in the 25-digit CD Key PLUS the next line of numbers underneath. Whoops!

mine just says 'invalid cd key' everytime i enter it (yes it's retail) and i duno what to do about it, someone help :<
