well i was reading some kids way of stopping the 3d startup of HL2 and it involved hacking a file, and basically messing it up.
The REAL WAY to do this is simply add -developer 1 to your startup options under hl2 properties.
This should enable quickstartups and not load the 3d backgrounds in the games.

Note: this might cause your first game load to be longer thou, as it needs to initilise the renderer. mabe not thou, but it seems that way on my shitty PC.
