Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP vs. Radeon x1300 512MB PCI Express

Hi, I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm not entirely sure of the answer to this question.

Which of the two cards would provide the best performance, or are they on a par with each other?

How can you ask? The x1300 has 4x as much vRAM and uses a faster port.

Performance for what? If for modern gaming, I'd recommend neither.

You're pitting an older performance card with a newer budget card ... Just don't make the mistake of thinking the budget card is faster simply because it has more memory and uses PCIE. You'll have to see some benchmarks, Chris. Try tomshardware.com - they have a video section with a benchmark comparison for pretty much every card ever made.

The 9800pro is still pretty powerful, i'd choose that over any 30 quid budget cards if I had to make a quick decision.

Just done a wee bit of research, and the 9800pro is actually quite a bit more powerful - but it does run hot. The X1300 is very cool and quiet, and has quite a bit of room for overclocking.

I'm pretty sure the X1300 is worse than the 9800 pro. Especially if it's a vanilla X1300 with no Pro or XT on it. Because it's a lot slower than the X1600 Pro and the X1600 pro was only slightly better than the 9800XT.

Are you buying a new card or do you have some used ones to pick from? Nvidia 6600 wouldn't be a bad card.

And lower end cards can't take advantage of extra memory like faster cards. So 512MB on an X1300 means squat. What would make some difference is knowing how many bits the memory bus is wide on those cards (64, 128 or 256bit). It's too bad retail advertises Memory like no tomorrow but don't even list memory width on the box.

Here is a farcry benchmark (1280x1024) from digit-life.com. The X1300 and 9800Pro are not on the same graph so you'll have to use a common card that is on both graphs to compare, like the X700pro.

The 9800pro (128MB) is 21% slower than the X700pro.
The X1300 Pro is 33% slower than the X700pro.

Thanks Asus, certainly a helpful break down.

Honestly, the reason why I'm asking is I've just bought a new PC on a major budget and it was an absolute bargain, but I just wasn't sure how the graphics cards compare. It's lead me to the decision to get a better card in there.

Is AGP 8X really slower than PCI 16X? I read somewhere (on a reputed site...tomsHW or Anandtech, cant rem) that there is not *that* much of a difference.

Yup on both.

Crossfire/SLI would be the exception for really needing the extra bus speed.

neither card is the best, Mind you (8800 GTX 768mb)in SLI mode is the best to market on what brand you get. I'de say My 2x 8800 GTSoc 640 2x1280mb SLI is kicking ass out of any ATI card any day.
