After installing, then reinstalling because of the da&Nm bug about the promo counterstrike source, can't find an icon file, now trying a third computer because the game doesn't work properly on two other computers ....
now I get, 90 minutes later, "updating half-life 2", "ready to play in approximately 95 minutes". This has to be the absolutely WORST game installation ever. All this silly VALVE interaction is presumably in order to market new games to me, but I will carefully check the boxes for new games, and NEVER NEVER NEVER buy anything that says valve on it.

What?
and NEVER NEVER NEVER buy anything that says valve on it.
That's your loss.

Okay...
How'd you buy it and what are your system specs?

to xlucidx, retail box, cd, purchased nearly a year ago. Windows xp sp2, p4 3.4ghz, 2 gigs ram, clean installation, only other programs installed are audio applications.

2fast4u, maybe you never experienced this: try to NOT install counterstrike promotional version from the retail cds for half-life2. After 20 minutes or so of cd juggling, you get a fatal error and the installation of half-life2 stops. This one I've run into more than once, so I should have remembered to allow the promotional installation.

Here is the relevant section from support.steampowered.com

Half-Life 2 CD Installation, cabinet file error, fatal disk error, or something similar.
Question

If during the initial installation process the option to install "Counter-Strike: Source" is NOT selected, an error may occur during installation. The message will be: cabinet file error, fatal disk error, or something similar.

...Ah.
I would say go back to the store and exchange for a new one... But, do you still have the receipt?

Did you just decide to install the game today after having it for a year?

did I just install it today after a year: no, it was so difficult to use on my older computer I just waited until this year's upgrade to a new computer. Don't think the cd's are at fault, since after all it is the interaction with valve over the internet that is causing the huge delay. Now at 71 minutes .....

Ahh, It's updating HL2. One year of updates, that's alot.

who the f*ck buys a game he won't be playing during the next year ??? :| ???

I think the question is wtf SELLS a game that can't be played for a year ...

rocketman, yes, I think so. Started at 4 pm local time, and it's now 8 pm .... showing 98% updated. Makes it a very expensive game, considering time cost of getting ready to play.

The cost of getting ready to play?
wtf are you talking about?

whitezero, you have a lot of posts oooooo is this how you get them?

well ... update: after 4 1/2 hours of installing, updating, and talking with the charming people of this forum, now my screen says "loading" with a blurred picture and the computer is frozen. Lovely .... the next person to offer advice will certainly say to re-install the software, or re-update. Maybe even, reinstall windows.

Nah. Just make sure your firewall lets through hl2.exe.

Did that, early on, added C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam etc hl2.exe.

Is there some other steam program that might be hanging at the firewall?

Just now I'm watching another "Loading"screen and a "loading resources" dialog box, after choosing "test sounds" (or something like that .. can no longer see it, naturally) from Counterstrike source.

no one helps? this seems like a pretty common problem. ...
Well. We can all see you are upset, but there's no need to throw your toys out of the cot, when people are still trying to be helpful. At least wait until everyone starts to post dumb questions or answers to you before you have a tanty.
BTW- seriously- who the hell buys a game they can't use for a year? Do you READ the box first? (Do you read at all?)
And yes - valve is a pain in the ass.

You do not need to update CS Source as well if you just want to play HL2. Just go to properties for that game and change the option 'keep game updated.'

On the other hand you'll need the HL2 updates to play single player properly. Its worth it in the end, you'll benefit from it.

The system works brilliantly if you take the time to understand it.
(and post in the right forum...)

I've had problems too. Following silly suggestions from the 10-12 year olds here, also deleted "clientregistry.blob", resulting in a new 1 1/2 hour wait for "updating". Yikes.
OK. Don't worry about him guys. Cry Baby here knows more than us. What a little wankstain, when people are trying to help. Oh well, anyone up for ice-cream? (we are 10-12 you know, so we aren't really going to get a beer, are we?)

Been reading on the steam users forum (can't post there, since the registration email has never been sent) --- lots of users there mention months of trying to get the da&^m*n game working, and hours of downloading. Sorry I'm frustrated -- have much experience with internet forums, and this one seems to have a lot of Shasta types.

We prefer the term "real people". Get used to it. And a long wait to download a years worth of updates.

You have never been on a better one. Sure, we have the noob-hostile people, but its the best community nevertheless.

Anyway, steam does suck. I hate the updating thing too.

I'm not NOOB hostile. :) I'm moron hostile. :dork: I'm crybaby hostile. ;(
Steam is just a release of hot miosture filled air, usually from a Valve, right when you have your hand in front of it.

There's no need to cover your idiocy with pathetic lies.

And don't buy a game if you're not going to play it for a year (or more). That's just stupid.

P.S. I'm anti-Valve and anti-Steam, but I never run around making threads about it.

My god... don't get angry at valve!!! They're giving you a years worth of updates!

Maybe someone should get a better internet connection OR you should be more patient... if I was you I would have simply turned my computer on to download a years worth of updates and walked away for a day...

Anyway the game is great... Enjoy

Hehe, maybe he bought the game early on & wanted to sell it with big profit on eBay afterward.

Or maybe he thinks games are like wine and just become better after a few years in the basement. :cheese:

Meh, I'm a Steam/Valve lover, have been since Steam came out. And who makes a game that can't be played for a year? There are plenty of people who don't make games with next gen graphix..buy theirs. And they have options to tone down the settings, hell, my roomate can play it on a 2.2 celeron 1 gig of ram and a 9200SE with ~25 fps, on EVERYTHING as low as possible...

It's playable..

I've played with a 1.7 GHz Celeron, 256 SDRAM and GeForce 2 64MB 64Bit. Sweet, huh?

...I recently re installed the game the unlocking and updating took under 10 minutes if it's taking you 90 minutes stop playing games with a 300 baud.

b.t.w. I have no problem with Valve, Steam on the other hand I hate... not so much anymore but does anyone remember when Steam first came out? and they couldn't even handle small mod and map releases and had to wait for hours because of it's inability to do it's only job... as I said this isn't a problem now when hl2 and source were released I don't know the figures but I would imagine millions of people were downloading the full game and the updates with no serious hangups
