Hi folks,

Apologies for posting this in the HL2 forum, but I couldn't see one that was better. I was just wondering how many people would actually like to walk through Black Mesa in Source as a working company. I know that there is a project called Black Mesa source, but this is to fullfil the original. I've always wanted to walk through Black Mesa without any "problems". I could never fullfill this as I just can't mod, but I was wondeirng if there was enough interest, someone might take up the idea.

I mean being able to get on the Black Mesa transit system and go anywhere and walk around "seems" quite cool to me. If it was ever made, it may be quite boring, I don't know, but it just has that intriguing factor. It would be such a massive area to cover and project to make it's probably impossible.

Anyway, just a thought
Cheers
Rob

there is no "black mesa"

what you saw in the game was just a small part of the "real facility", but it was never designed, so ...

Nothing is impossible, but I think to make it exciting enough for playability factor, everything would have to be interactive. Also there could be an option where at any location in the facility you can see what happens when the massive break down occured. I would be at the escape exit to see it through there :P

I have a better idea : the real entire world in Source!!! Oh yeah, better than Google earth! I wanna walk through my home in Source! Woot

Yeah that would be really cool! There's too much Action in games. I would love to just walk into Black Mesa, show the Guard my pass, get on the transit system and get off at the cafes to watch the scientists working... Before smashing them in the heads with crowbars.

Maybe a mapper would use Black Mesa: Source's textures when it's released and make a couple of maps like that :D

That would be a huge amount of work, we just saw a little part of it in all of the games.

A massive amount of work but damn it would be cool.

This would make one hell of a MMORPG

Not really. But something like Sourceworld (Where you don't really have any fighting or anything). Now THAT would rule :)

I could see a game where you walk through the Black Mesa facility and the focus of the game was to advance up the ladder as a scientist there and finally get to where HL1 started. The main game focus would be more puzzle and task managing based and character interactions would affect your status as a co-worker in your enviornment. Maybe even see some original characters and maybe G-man once in the game.
It would be like The Sims meets HalfLife Source.

I've always thought of this kind of a game, but i think it will take too much time, money to get everything to work as if you was actually there. Maybe in the future i rekon within 5 - 10 years we may have something similar to this, Do those headsets that u can wear that make u feel like ur in game support HL2 (Source Engine) If so that would be really cool to play BM.

It's good to see that some other people think this may be interesting.

I originally thought the concept would be like GTA: Vice City or San Andreas - not in game content but where the world carries on around you and you aren't the centre of it. So Scientists would do there job, security would be security etc. As I said, it could be really boring, but you just never know.

I guess the main question is whether Valve actually have a concept drawing of Black Mesa on paper or whether the bits we see are the only bits that exist as they didn't need to develop anything else outside it and also whether they would share it with us.

I think it's more of a pipe dream of mine, but as you say, you never know.

I think that you would be seen as a HL god if you would be able to pull that off.

This isn't really completely on topic, but I once made (well, started) a halflife level where you went through that beginning lab level, but the entire thing was upside down. You would start off in the chamber area with the two huge metal doors. The door was ajar, and you would crawl through. You would then jump down to the floor (ceiling) and you would see that the chair barney sits on is in pieces on the floor (ceiling) , giving the effect that it had fallen down and broken on impact. Those hanging lightfixtures were broken, and one was leaned up against the big world map. You would break through the map, and get to that big computer lab room. (It fits together perfectly if you look in the map file) all the computers where crashed on the ground, sparks everywhere and such. You would then crawl through the vent that is in that room, and into one of the hallways. In the hall way a pipe fell through the ceiling (floor) and you would climb up that to get to another door.

That's about all I finished, I stopped because of some stupid Hammer error and just kind of gave up. I'll try and find the VMF if anyone is interested.

Man, I would love that. Imagine the SIZE of that badboy. You know what'd be awesome? If it was real-time (day to night, like GTA).

Whos the best person to ask if it is possible to get a drawing/map of Black Mesa - maybe at Valve? If we can get hold of one, I might try putting just a few VERY small areas together. I've never modded, but there is a first time for everything. :E

On a seperate note, would it be illegal to open the Half Life: Source GCF to view the valve map? I'm quite happy to build from scratch, but I need something to compare with to check it looks the same?

People put together all the maps of HL1 and they noticed that certain parts of the game overlapped.

So it can't be done 100% as in the game.
