reasonable explaination for a silent release

Im probably one of those rare "cough cough" fans that try to remain realistic yet hopeful for half-life 2. Im not one of the crazy people that think the game went gold weeks ago and is being released early september, but just out of curiousity, why would a silent release/silent gold make any sense at all? :dork:
