In this thread, name a band you're into so other people can recommend you something similar. It'd help if you also included a short description of what you like about them so it's not completely redundant (last.fm and the like are handy for name-only recommendations, but kind of impersonal and hit-or-miss).

So, I'll start with Pain of Salvation. Not my favourite progressive band, but I really like the way they combine rhythmic, technical metal parts with sweeping, dramatic melodic parts. Also, they're swedish, which is pretty much cruise control for awesome.

If you don't have any recommendations for anyone else, feel free to post anyway, but please please keep it to one or two requests at a time so the thread doesn't get bogged down. Cheers.

Pandora, tbh. :p

Anyways, Dropkick Murphys.
I guess I just really like how they use the bagpipes interspersed with their music and I like how most of their songs are short and sweet and talk about the Irish people and their home life.

And sorry, never heard of Pain of Salvation.

What are you talking about, our bands suck.

Except for Mando Diao.

Honestly I don't know many other swedish bands, I just have a thing for swedes.

It's sexual.

<3

If you like that kind of Swedish Prog Metal, I would suggest you 'Opeth'.
Maybe a bit harder, some songs are slow, balladish, with clean singing, while others are death metal with growling n' stuff.
Personally I've never listened to this kind of music much, as I find it a bit depressive, but the extreme quality of their work is unquestionable.
You should give it a shot. All my friends who like Pain of Salvation, like Opeth as well.

"Opeth incorporates progressive metal, progressive rock, folk, and jazz into their usually lengthy songs. Many compositions include acoustic guitars and strong dynamic shifts, as well as growling and clean vocals. "

I have been looking for bands with an experimental dreamy sound, with the modern style of vocals of today. And I have found very few :(

Deftones for example is a band I love. I love Incubus (Morning view and Make yourself) for their experimental elements. I loved a few Mute Math Songs as well. I liked Filter too, and enjoy songs from A Perfect Circle, Chevelle, Lovedrug (due to their rather dreamy spacey music), Breaking Benjamin's Phobia album too. I like I don't know how to explain it, something that has a tint of Nu + Experimental + Modern style Vocals.

Also like anything that has to do with the Nu-Rock, Funk and Jazz metal music, with very powerful bass guitars. Incubus again. The standard RATM, RHCP are alright. I like a few LinkinPark and Limbizkit songs as well. Headstrong is an awesome band I like as well. I really don't know how to find bands of these genre's, because they are not popular here on hl2.net, don't have a large fan base (not all) like certain bands do, not exactly mainstream so I can't hear it on the radio. If anyone can recommend anything...

I've heard Opeth mentioned here a bunch of times but never actually heard much, might as well check em out. Ta.

For something a bit heavier with some of that 'dreamy' sound, try Black Light Burns. Similar to Perfect Circle with a bit more of an industrial NiN-like sound. Some of the softer stuff on their (only) album is pretty sublime, might be what you're after.

For the funk/metal sound with lotsa bass - Primus, Primus and more Primus. If you're not familiar yet (for shame), try Sailing the Seas of Cheese, then Frizzle Fry, then the rest. Possibly a bit weirder than what you're after, but undeniably awesome nonetheless.

Also worth a name drop (mostly because I always try to work at least one kiwi artist into my recommendations :P) - SJD. Minimalist/indie/electronica type stuff. Not exactly rock but he has the dreamy/experimental sound pretty much down-pat.

Check out Disillusion or Dark Suns. Although they don't really sound like Pain of Salvation, they're both dramatic prog metal. (And Disillusion is amazing)

Come on, man. Everybody knows Opeth these days.

... and jeez, they sound nothing like Pain of Salvation.

Possibly. As I said, I've never listened Opeth nor Pain that much. Of Opeth, I've heard some songs from 'Damnation' and 'Blackwater Park' - The Drapery Falls is probably my favourite.

Also, I've never said they're like Pain, I was only referring to them as a Swedish Prog Metal band, and suggesting it to Bad Hat, as most people usually like both bands.

How about flogging molly? They're like dropkick murphys but not annoying.

If you want specifically celtic/punk, those are pretty much your choices afaik. They're probably the only bands whose albums you can get without going to a show.

If you want simply folk/punk, there are tons of bands. Thing is, I can't think of any besides Gogol Bordello atm.

On the basis of nothing at all: everyone listen to Mr. Bungle.

My work here is done.

Reccomend me someone like D. Kay. The style of music on his album.

What type of Bathory? Their early first-wave black metal? The thrash metal of Blood Fire Death? Or the Viking-era stuff?

I like the album "Bathory". I guess it was their first album from about 1984. I don't know about the rest. I should get more of their albums.

I have just the thing for you..

Find an album by Bark Psychosis called 'Hex', should be right up your alley. They have a wonderful atmosphere, slightly dark and brooding.

Also, look into Menomena, either 'Friend and Foe' or 'I Am The Fun Blame Monster'. These guys are just brilliant in the studio, and the small details in the production like how noise is controlled and reverb is applied make their sound very unique.

Lastly, check out Grizzly Bear. Only one release so far I think, their album 'Yellow House'. I won't even try to explain GB's sound, it's just definitely unique.

Have you heard of Katatonia? They got a new lead singer like 2 albums ago - something like that, anyway, their old guy was a growler, but their new guy is insanely talented and their shit just plain ****ing rules. I love their old stuff too.

If you like metal [at all] you should really love it, as it's some of the best stuff I've heard.

BTW I'm loving the shit out of Bathory right now. Might want to check it out.

There's also a Pogues album which might fit the bill? Rum, Sodomy and the Lash I think.

Grab The Return and Blood Fire Death, as they're very similar to the first one. You might also want to check out early Mayhem (Deathcrush album), Possessed (Seven Churches), and Venom (Black Metal).

I heard Burzum is good too.

Is there anything out there like Nirvana (the heavy stuff like Milk It, or Endless Nameless) or the Pixies?

Yeah I dunno why I said Skyclad though, just because they and Bathory both invented folk metal... still totally different.

I like Burzum alot when they just do the metal, but the ambient stuff - which they do quite a lot - is lame as shit IMHO. The vocals are a bit over the top for my taste as well.

Thanks so much BadHat and thefiznut. I actually know of Grizzly Bear, BLB and I have just gotten down to listening to Primus, which are quite awesome. Will Check out the other bands as well. SJD is awesome too, he has a fantastic voice.

There are two bands I could say but I'd just get flamed so I'm gonna go ahead and say Muse. i love them because they are just so goddamn awesome and Matt Bellamy is god.

Do like them but there is definitely such thing as 'too much Radiohead'. You listen to too much and you just feel like killing yourself with depression. Well, I do, anyway.

I think the band Lovedrug, well a few of their songs has Muse style vocals and progressive guitars. You might like Porcupine Tree, Amplifer (awesome band), Radiohead. There's not much I can think off, but you can Last.fm them.

There's also a Pogues album which might fit the bill? Rum, Sodomy and the Lash I think.

Also The Real McKenzies, Bouncing Souls (perhaps), and... don't you hate it when you have something on thetip of your brain and you can't remember. It'd help if my freind didn't have my freaking CD.

Go mug him.

You do not have sufficient strength of character.
