reinstall HL2?

I am wping out the current XP installation on which my HL2 is installed, and fresh install everything from beginning including HL2. Does uninstalling HL2 before it is the only thing I have to do? Do I have to take any other steps to prevent any installation issues on my fresh install? Thanks!

There isn't anything you need to back up, once you've formatted you'll need to download Steam again and put your username and password back in to download Half-life 2 again (or if you bought the retail copy, put the DVD in and let Steam update it). So make sure you remember that.

If you took any screenshots during your time playing they will be lost, as will your save files be deleted. You can unlock all the chapters in Half-life 2 using a cheat code though if you want to play a specific chapter in the future on your new install. The directory for your saves is "Program Files/Steam/steamapps/username/Halflife2/hl2/SAVE"

This process of backing up saves is pretty irritating, but luckily Valve are releasing "SteamCloud" soon which allows users to store saves and user configs on Steam's backend, so you can access them on any computer once you log into your account. We're still waiting for the update! L4D will ship with it already supported, so 2 months ish...

but shouldnt I install it? Once before, I have tried to install on different computer, then steam complained that i cant do that due to the fact it is already installed on another PC. And once I whipe out everything and fresh install I am afraid it is gonna tell me the same thing...

You can install Steam on as many computers as you wish, and install Half-life 2 onto those too. The only thing you can't do is log into the Steam account in 2 locations at 1 time.

All you need to do, is log into Steam using your same Username and password as on your account you are using at the moment. You then just need to install Half-life 2 in that location. Job done!

You don't need to create a new account.
