am i the only one that thinks it is absolutely ridiculous that valve doesn't even have a confirmed release date yet? the game is presumably almost gold and we don't even have a release date?! that is extremely stupid in my opinion.
to the fanboys: please don't flame me for this thread, logical people will see that it is a valid question to ask. i've never heard of a game that did not even have a confirmed release date this close to going gold

Valve did have a release date, but once they missed it, everyone hated them for it (September 30th last year). So they don't give them out anymore. Just get some patience, they will most likely announce a release date with the gold announcement.

Eh, it bothers me too. But hey its valve and who knows what they are doing over in their HQ.

HL2 is not going gold on Monday. Period. We have no idea when it is going gold - it could be tommorow or it could be next year. So therefore, it doesn't have a release date which they miss again and dissapoint fans.

THINK: If VALVe gives a date before the game is gold and then it is delayed again, think what will happen.

The official word from valve is summer 2k4, anything else is false. (And just to let you know, summer has a whole month left)

that's a pretty stupid reason for not putting out another release date...
and i never said hl2 was going gold on monday, i said it was going gold SOON. based on what valve has said in this forum and based on the fact that it was preloaded a few days ago. and most games have an official release date (or at least a fairly accurate one) long before going gold.
and i heard doug say MID summer, not just summer. unless that was an announcement i missed. either way "summer" is not a release date

We (Hl2.net) have learned to be patient, we prefer to wait and have a good game, than VALVe rushing the game(= Doom 3) .

Tell me, how would a release date help them?

The only thing it would do is please some fans, and then piss them off when it was missed.

Right now they are in bug testing stages so they cannot know when they will finish. It would be completely pointless to try to guess a date, when there is no need to do so. Id software has the best policy when it comes to this, with there "When it's done".

That's BS. How in the world do you think Id rushed D3? They always refused to give out a release date and when it was done it was one of the most polished games on the market.

what does rushing a game have to do with putting out a release date? i'm not asking that they put out a release date as in "the game will be out in 2 days" i'm just asking them to put out a release date.

Doug was speculating, as logical people would have guessed.

Why would valve put out a release date? They'd most likely miss it, so what's the point?

official word on the status would be nice though! especially after the gold post hoax.

DOOM 3's exact release date wasn't confirmed until the game went gold. Lots of other games are the same way. It's a logical conclusion by a logical person. Your opinion is a tad bit uninformed. Sorry for being such a fanboy.

WTF are you on about ? You just contradicted yourself.

My guess is that Hl2 is done, completley and they are working on cs:s, but it shouldn't be long now. It would be nice for conformation but I'm not too worried. It should be out by the end of this month.

And Gabe also said summer 2k4 during e3, and that was a month before summer, so i think it was alittle more then speculation and more of an educated guess.

duh. who said he WASN'T speculating? and why WOULDN'T valve put out another release date? almost every game has an official release date before the game goes gold. that last sentence of your post just gives me a headache

if any of you have ever done any serious programming work, you know how hard it is to tell when you'll get something finished. It's not easy to predict when you'll finish the job.

Heh... it's never okay is it? First Valve gets flamed for giving a releasedate they missed, now they get flamed for not giving one.
And if they do give one now, and miss it (even by a few days) they get flamed once more.

It will come when it comes, knowing that releasedate won't make it come any quicker. What are you gonna do when you have a date? Light a candle for each day to go? Mark the days on the calendar? What's the point?

And as for big games not having releasedates: Doom 3 didn't have one before going gold. And all in all, it's probably better that way, otherwise they'll just miss those dates again (not that it matters, quality comes before a timely release).

valve isn't every other game company. They've released many things delayed, and i think it's a good idea for them not to say a date they won't make. Since you know it will go gold soon you shouldn't be worried. Valve will give a date when the time is right, and not a moment after. :D

no, maybe i wasn't making sense but what i meant was that i don't expect valve to announce a release date that says the game will be out in 2 days or anything like that. i just want them to announce an accurate release date about when the game will be out, so i don't understand how that would make them rush the game (especially since they are finished with everything except a few bugs according to them).
