valve didnt promise anything. the surprise you are refering to is from... i dunno who it is, but the person that said just before hl2 went gold they had insider info that hl2 was going gold early next week. so this guy was right about hl2 going gold, and he did say there was a surprise coming so he could be right, but it was not a promise from valve thats for sure.

How would that be a surprise? It has to apply to everyone and everyone has HL:S available, whether they've bought it or not. Ergo, a suprise would be something we did not already know about. Something like a real DM or a free expansion pack.

IIRC the "surprise" was not promised by VALVe, it was (maybe) mentioned by one of the early reviews.

in fact, it might even have been from someone's misinterpretation of the cover of the Dutch mag PC Gameplay, which mentioned something about "surprise" on the cover of their HL2 review issue. a picture of the cover was posted on their site once news of the rupcoming review got out.

the actual quote could have been just "the game is surprisingly good". i remember a whole bunch of ppl seeing bablefish translations including the word "surprise" and going "OMFG THEY SECRETLY MADE TEH MULTIPLAYAH!!!!1111"
