I'm thinking about buying either Age of Empires 3 or Civilization 4, but first I need to know if my comp can run it with descent graphic without any slowdowns.

Pentium 4, 3.19 or 20 GHz
GeforceFX 5600
512MB of RAM.

And which game should I get? Note that I've never played any of Civilization games before, but I heard it's pretty good from many people and reviews.

I'd get Civ IV between those. I love Civ 3, though it frustrates me, and AoE3 wasnt that new and exciting.

AoE3 is more taxing I believe, most of that is probably due to the excessive blooming the game implements. Civ IV will definately run better, not to mention better value.

I dunno.

Civ 4 is a great game and all, but it gets [can] get old fast.

Not saying it WILL get old fast, but it has the potential to get boring, fast.

both are awesome and aoe3 has quite a good single player campaign. i also have civ 4 but i haven't got into it yet.

you could probably run aoe3 @ 1024x768 with medium graphics fine; your video card is letting you down the most, than your ram.

AOE3 runs on:

My comp - AMD 64 3200+, GF 7800GT, Max settings, Shadows Low
My bros: - AMD 2700+, Radeon 9600XT, Low settings

Both smooth, even did network play.

AoE3 will be much more taxing because of all of the bells and whistles, so if that is your concern and you really want a great strategy game, Civ 4 is the way to go. They are both incredibly fun and will keep you busy for countless hours of ever-evolving gameplay.

Get Civ 4.
I'd suggest saving up for another 512 MB stick of ram, with my current 1 GB of ram, it gets choppy. Though... I do play on maps that are hyper-realistic to Earth.

How is Civ4 gameplay? I've never played any Civ games before and I have no idea how does the gameplay works.

Civ game's are pretty unique, there's no real direct comparison that can be made (at least none I know of) so your best bet would be to read a review. (IGN or Eurogamer if they have it, I dislike GS cause their reviews are usually terrible and the most biased / paid)

I don't know about Civ 4, but in AoE 3 you can fiddle with the graphics settings. So you shouldn't have a problem requirements-wise.

Played the demo of Civ4 and I have no idea how the gameplay works. I see bunch of barbarians owning my ass whole time while I'm struggling figuring out what the hell I'm suppose to do. The demo hardly tells any basic turtorial stuffs.

I hope the real game isn't like this.

There's a full tutorial in the game as well as a helpful manual.

You can change graphics settings for Civ 4 too.

Civ 4 is lovely, great fun.

It shoudl run fine on your machine, though not hyper-realistically.
