I am trying to start a server with the tool that came in my Counter Strike Source package to play HL2 Deathmatches against a few friends.
I am not good at this but it looked straight forward enough for me to give it a go. However my server only shows up in LAN listing and not on the net. So I got the tip to put sv-lan 0 in the console but it is still the same.

Ok, so what I do is:
I start Source Dedicated server.
I choose deathmatch.
I name it.
I set Network to internet.
I set players to 4.
Port is preset to 27015
I set the RCON password.

Then I start the server and add sv_lan 0 in console. It then says:
Connection to Steam servers successful.
Adding master server 69.28.151.178:27011
Adding master server 69.28.151.162:27011
] sv_lan 0

When I check for it it still shows up in LAN listing and is not to be found in the internet listing.

Am I screwing sth up on the way or what a hell might b the problem?

Daniel...

Welcome!

Source Dedicated server is a feature that you have to pay for through certain web sites, but not entirely necessary, especially if its for about 4 players.

Don't worry about "Source Dedicated server"

Simply Start HL2: DM/what ever.
On the main menu select: Create server, Choose your style i.e TDM/DM/time limit/frag limit/map/etc.

Click start, the map will load, go to the console and enter sv_lan 0, hit enter and then sv_region 0, hit enter. Then reload the map, type: map(space)Scroll2YourMap/UpDown. Then give your IP to your friends or bring up the console before you reload the map and type: Hostname *****ThIsIsYoUrSeRvErNaMe***** And for a password type: password *blahBlah*. Give both server name and password to your friends. Oh yeah, almost forgot, you wont see your server in the list, cos you cant really join your server, silly boy. Just make sure you reload the map after the sv_ cmd's.

Ok, thanks.
Just a few, maybe silly, questions more.

How do bring down the console for a server I´ve started that way? When I hit the designated key for toggleserver nothing happens. I even changed the designated key in the config.cfg to F12 to be sure it would work as I am on a swedish keyboard. And, I´ve also tried to install a US keyboard setup but still nothing happens. Is it supposed to be possible to bring it down when I am in the game or should I be somewhere else when doing that?

And last, how do someone do to connect to it with an IP number (when I´ve managed to start it)?
I cant find a way to just type in an IP and hit connect.

Just type in the config.cfg :
Code:
toggleconsole KEY (try j)
Example : toggleconsole j

As for an IP, you indeed can't do that in Source. You can, however, add specific IP addresses to your favourite servers. You can also type in
Code:
connect IPADDRESS
in the console.
Example : connect 10.0.0.1

Oh, and don't forget the command
Code:
sv_region 0
This makes the server universal, as servers can be filtered by continent.

Thanks a bunch.
But, as all the times before it fell on the damn console I think.

I typed in
toggleconsole "j"
in the config.cfg and started but still nothing happens when I hit "j" when in a game.

This is damn frustrating because I kinda bought the game so me and a few friends could play agains each other in Gasworks like we did during our student years in LANs but I can´t get it to work. The sales guy said it would b no problems, just hit create server and all would b explained but it is nothing like that and there is no information on this with the game itself.

Ah, the mapcycle. Can I set that in anyway also when I get started btw?

That sales guy probably knew I was going to help you :p

For the console, please follow this tutorial to the part where you get the console : Link

And the mapcycle should be able to be changed in "mapcycle.txt", but that doesn't work in dedicated servers :/

You can also just start a server with the standard level, and then use
Code:
changelevel LEVEL
to change the level to what you want.

There was this hack to make the maps changeable, but I forgot it and I can't find it back :/

Ok, I am off your back with a 1000 thanks...

Really nice to help out a total rookie like that. I know how to game but not how to do stuff like that...

I am gonna write a step by step instruction from a computer illiterates point of view and ask it to b posted as sticky. I found a lot of similar threads from before so I guess it is a common problem.

Ok turning on your console dosen't have to be that difficult. In options, go to keyboard/advanced and you should see a window that has Weapon Fast Switch and Devolper's Console unchecked. Check Devolper's Console (and Weapon Fast Switch if you want) and hit "~". Voila!

That only works for non-AZERTY keyboards :p
