Should people with serious genetic defects be mandatorily sterilized?

Hmm?

I got this idea from political compass.

Do you think those people should be mandatorily sterilized?

For example, like a form of Huntington's mixed with lepropsy. Or a diesease like AIDS was hereditary (it wouldn't be AIDS, it would be HIDS?).

Is it a freedom to pass your severly defective genes unto the next generation? Or should they be prohibited to do so for the continued existance of humanity?

Personally, it sounds inhuman, even in my book. And I've never been in ffavor of eugenics.

But if there was a gene that caused supernatural, possibly telepathic skills to develop, I'd be sending the lot of them into concentration-internment camps (or draft them from birth for military uses). Think happy-camps for X-men. :p
Also, on a related note, there is unfortunately inadequete proof that stupidity is hereditary.

So, my opinion is: only if it causes severe and substantial harm to the general cohesion of society. (BURN ALL WITCHES/PSYCHICS AT THE STAKE!)

wait for poll.

A mother with AIDS can pass HIV on to the baby.

I think that if the disease were serious enough (such as in the case with HIV) then yes, these people should not be allowed to breed and pass it along to future generations.

I partly agree, but I still get qualms about the idea of "purifying the gene pool".

Think of it as "preventing soiling of the gene pool"

'Psychers' should be spelled with a K.
'Psykers'
LOL WARHAMMER 40K!!

Oh, that was where the word came from, right? Heh, I knew it! <3 Warhammer 40K.

lol kk.

Yep. Sounds a bit Nazi-esque, but I think of it as helping rather than harming society.

same idea hitler had, and he didn't get to far

Actually, based on how many Jews there are in the world today and how many the Nazis killed, I'd say he did a pretty good (read horrible) job of ridding the world of them.

Actually he got pretty far.
I lol'd.

Anyway, this is different. We're talking about genetic defects and diseases, not using eugenics to erase traits or cultures. This is removal of defects hazardous to the gene pool. I wholeheartedly support this endeavor, and anyone who's lived with a terrible disease should know better than to want to pass it on to their offspring if it can be inherited.

I guess sterilization is probably better than, you know, murder.

Of course, you could look at it and say 'OMG STERILIZATION IS MURDER' but then you'd be...

I don't know what you'd be.

Optional sterilization if a given parent/couple has a 50%-or-higher chance of giving birth to a child with some debilitating genetic defect (mental, physical, etc). Mandatory abortion of said embryo if it would produce such a child.

Hitler tried to sterilize people with certain genes, retarded people and such.

okay, okay, I guess he did kinda sorta kill a lot of jews...

That's about the only thing I can say that Hitler did right when it came to his racial, ethnic, and genetic policies.

I went with the "I don't care if there isn't any proof, just kill everyone below the IQ of 80" option because for some reason I did one of those online IQ tests and got something like 100+. I'm 14 so is this good or bad?

Well how do you know if someone has an IQ above 80 then? After all if I am under 80 I just voted to have myself euthanized.

Iq tests are not a valid way to measure intelligence. I doubt there is one.

You could always put a flesh eating virus on a piece of toast with a huge warning sign on. Whoever tries to eat the toast gets taken out by snipers. Then force fed twinkies.

And that's why I always ask people, "What about all the GOOD things Hitler did?"

I usually tell them they didn't know him. In between the mass murdering, invading countries and inducing a police-state he was actually very charming. You just shouldn't talk to him about work.

No, a cure could come at an time (for AIDS or whatever), and before anyone says "it might not come for ages" it could come at any time and we have no right to execute people for something genetic (which they cannot help)

On the flipside, consider the people they could infect or their offspring who would inherit the disease. Is it right to bear children knowing that they could inherit your problems?

This is going to be interesting.

Proceed.

I'd like to think that some day we will be able to fix any genetic defects that occur before birth. But I can also see that it won't happen any time soon, thanks Jesus. You dick.

TBH if I had AIDS I wouldn't try to create offspring anymore just because I don't want to hurt anyone else with that terrible disease. But if I am a knghenry who wants to have a kid at all costs (not adopt, which is probably what I would do after long consideration), I'd say neuter the ****er :p

Hmm i notice a lot of Hitler-Love...time to DIE you Hitler-Lovers

We are only a few yours from being able to artificially inseminate a clean egg with a clean sperm from parents that both have a hereditary genetic defect. So no. Mandatory abortion of fetuses with the defects is much better IMO, although it can be hard to check that.

I like how a third of this forum supports the culling of stupids. :p

christian?

christian?
This isn't necessarily a fundamentalist christian type debate. This is fecking around with genetics - "I don't want this type of baby, I want one with blonde hair and blue eyes!". That's what this would lead to. Designer babies.

Well, I'd say they should be informed about the risks/problems and it should be strongly discouraged by the state. Generally, not having babies would be the most sensible thing to do for these people.

nobody has the right to tell people that can't have kids.
