Sorry If this isn't supposed to go here, I'm seriously not a n00b. I'm just in a hurry.

Do you need an internet connection to play Half Life 2?

Practically, yes.

STEAM has an offline mode, but I've never actually gotten it to work.

You need an Internet Connection to activate and download mandatory updates. After that you can go in offline mode and you won't require the Internet.

i got my half-life 2 and somebody already had the cd-key on their account....then i got another cd-key...and it worked

but...ya..offline mode=no achievements

Really I just want to mess around with Garry's Mod, so not receiving Achievements is ok.

I am on the computer at my Grandparent's house, I have a computer at my house but with no Internet.

Thanks for the answers

My computer has been broken for three weeks. Three weeks with no Valve games. My entire Winter break, couldn't play a single game. Been using the library's internet. :(

You only need to go on the internet to activate and download the upadtes for Half-Life 2 once, when you first go to play it. When making your Steam account, click the "Remember Password".

My Steam got broke early on in Winter Break, so I couldn't re-beat HL2 Ep2.

Mason - when you first install Half-life 2 and Garry's Mod you'll need to connect to the internet to:

1) Let Steam unlock your files so it knows you have a legal version of the game
2) Install updates for the game so it plays without any glitches

Once this is done, you can set the options on Steam to 'offline mode' and stop the games from updating. From this point, HL2 and Gmod will be playable offline. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

So I've bought the game already, and I've downloaded Garry's Mod 9.

Everything seems to be working fine, thanks for helping
