This is pretty sad, actually. He was the first ever to climb Everest, and was pretty much a national hero...

New Zealand will pretty much be mourning him for the next week.

But it should be mentioned that he wasn't the first to climb Mt. Everest. The Sherpas themselves have been climbing the mountain for centuries.

Hillary was the first to successfully climb Everestand make it back alive... and that includes all the Sherpas beforehand who climbed the mountain but never attempted the summit as well as George Mallory who probably did reach the summit but sadly perished on the way down.

Isn't Hillary a national hero in New Zealand to the point that he appears on a few bank notes over there?
