So in theory we should get a price break on STEAM...

I said (in another post $50 for the game via STEAM) BUT I read this in another Games forum:

"Say a retail game goes for $50... half of that goes to the retailer, so the distributor gets $25. 10% of that goes to the distributor, so the publisher gets $22.50. Cost of the box, manual, and CD case is around $7.50, so that leaves $15 for the publisher and development studio to split, so if we retailed the game for $50, <insert game Co> would probably see about $7.50 of that, if we got a great deal from the publisher (more likely, it would be $2.50)."

So IF HL2 goes for $50 (via Steam) Valve gets (roughly) $47.50 more per game then the "store" bought copy.

Thats a huge chunk of change if you step back and think about it.

Has it been posted before that the STEAM version will be "less"? a Little less? Etc.....

Didn't Gabe or someone at Valve said that they get around 2.5 times as much money from a purchase through Steam than when sold at retail. Was I seeing things again or does someone else remember this, too? The info from Valve thread perhaps?

price hasn't been stated officially, i don't think there will be much of a price break, and if there is it will only be maybe $5-$10

I would assume the 2.5 times would already be minus any and all other fees..And as a "hot game I figure they would get more instead of the "average" $2.50. Lets say $4.25 times 2.5 is $10.60 per game sold. Thats still a lot......

They can't give too much of a price break for legal reasons. (They'd totally kill the retail box distributors if they offered HL2 for half the price.)

I believe (in the long run) that is their very intent and one of the (if not the) the "sole" purpose for STEAM.

In theory, the game should be noticably cheaper than the store version... but in reality I serious doubt this will be the case.

Considering you can buy CS:CZ for less money in the store than on Steam is a good example of why you shouldn't expect a significant price difference.

If HL2 goes for $49 in store I would like to think on Steam it should go for $39, I don't think that is too much to ask... but I am not going to be surprised if it is a minimal differece (like $5), I'll be disapointed but not surprised.

Half the money doesn't go to the retailer.

In the UK it costs about £17 (varies from game to game though) for a retailer to buy the game and they usually sell it on for about £25.

I'd assume it's about the same in the US (in $ though, obviously).

Found this with a Google search.... Im sure its the same for a PC game..

A blurb from said article:
"The distributors will tell me that they normally buy games at a discount they call "fifty ten and ten." This means that I have to offer 50% off just because I'm selling to a distributor (my $30 drops to $15); another 10% off that price if the distributor buys some minimum quantity of games, usually 12 (I'm down to $13.50); and another 10% off if the distributor pays his bills on time (I'm now down to $12.15). Note that "fifty ten and ten" does not add up to 70%, because the "tens" are calculated after taking off the previous discounts. The net discount is 59 1/2%.

So for our $30 product, Schlocko is only getting $12.15. The distributor doesn't keep the rest; he usually takes a 10-20% cut. The retailer gets the rest of the money. "

When CZ first came out it was $39.99 in stores and $39.99 over steam right? Now it's $29.99 in stores and $29.99 over steam.
