in the video it shows gordon and two other people looking out the window at the combine driving up in their armor tank right? they look worried, in the bink video its a girl and a guy looking out the window...now in the 2004 e3 its two guys. is this a little strange?

Yes, there have been some character changes. No one is really sure why ...

i think that when you play the game... the characters that are ( non - important ) will swap between Female & Male... to inshure that no player had the same experience..
or something like that,.,.

they already talked about that in the bink video thread

o man this game is gonna sukc now THE GIRLS LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW ARE GONE!
jk
we still have alyx ;)

I'm pretty sure this is a nice little feature of HL2. NPCs are randomized. Valve said that there are a lot of different types of NPCs, so every time you play, you shouldn't run into the same one in the same area.

not reading an off-topic message in a big thread is ok

i subscribe to the theory that random npcs are, well, random.
they probly chose m/f, b/w, age group, and then have several faces to mush together somehow

But that does mean that the vid is new.. which also means that the shadow problems STILL aren't fixed ;(

What shadow problem are you talking about?

Edit: Maybe i should watch it again, and take a closer look @ the shadows..

Look at the table with the man sitting next to it, no shadows are being cast by the table, but shadows are being cast by the man ...

Okay.. I thought this has been said many times...
You have the option to turn off the shadows of models in the game. (Called props)

They must have had them turned off.

these are not shadow PROBLEMS! hl2 DOES NOT HAVE dynamic SHADOWS!

the thing that bugs me the most is the shooting capability of the combine soldiers. they seem to miss too often. its also noticeable in other videos. these guys ar supposed to be elite, but can't shoot straight. whats up with that? I hope the game on hard difficulty rectifies the shooting ability of the combine soldiers. i am worried the game will be too easy in that respect.

Actually.. I think it does heh.. Sorry to tell ya..

There wasn't any difficulty settings in Half-Life. Is there going to be any difficulty settings in Half-Life 2?

....there were difficulty settings to what i remember

Don't know what game you played but Half-Life definatly had difficulty settings.

They changed how much damage stuff did, and things like that.

Half-Life 2 will also have difficulty settings. Same as Half-life. Mmmkay?

Wups :laugh: Been a long time since i played ;( I'm really going to have to play it again before Half Life 2. But i was thinking is there any point if it's being updated to Source. I will miss the old version though ...

It sounds like you mean the next patch for Half-Life will make it on the Source engine... That's not true.. They are releasing an entirely new game for that. Comes with HL2 I think.

Who said the Combine were elite? The way I've heard them described, they're kinda like authoritarian goons. Besides, a lot of people are speculating the weapon they're using is the Heckler/Koch MP-7, which at any sort of range will probably be pretty inaccurate because of its short barrel (I believe it's only a little longer than a pistol's). Have that fire on full auto with almost no mass to absorb any recoil, and I'm suprised they're as accurate as they are.

no it does not...brush shadows are compiled with the maps...object shadows can only be casted from one lightsource...so it can happen that shadows go into different directions..also i am pretty sure that dynamic lights don't cast any shadows(there was a picture where the hl2 flashlight did not cast shadows!)

I'm sure there will be many little changes, maybe so people get a different experiance than shown in the videos.

That's what i meant ... I should have worded it better. I didn't realise it would be comming with HL2. I thought only CS:S would be released with HL2 and you down load it then through Steam...

Omg.. that was what i was afraid of.. that object shadows can only be casted from one lightsource... that sux.. soo much..

This is from the latest 2004 Bink Trailer. So who was in the other E3 trailer?

it's not impossible with the engine...it was a design decision, not a technical limitation ^^ (or was it??)

Why would a flashligh cast shadows? It makes light, not takes it away..

Oh and about the flashlight... Why do they make the source of the light right from the players eyes? This we we can't see the spots where the light isn't hitting. (Behind the object its shining on)

Hope they fix this. It makes it look like just a big circle of light, not mapped onto the terrain. Like 3D.. Bah I can't explain it well.

loooooool of course i was talkin about the objects in front the flashlight casting no shadows....
and im sure that it casts no shadows :P

HL2 *DOES* have dynamic shadows. It also has dynamic lighting.
What HL2 does NOT feature, is a unified dynamic lighting system. Only one shadow will be cast, by a set position per map. Such is why specific light sources do not affect the shadows direction.

HL2 uses a mix of lightmaps and dynamic lights/shadows.

Having trouble understanding what you are saying..

I don't know much about this technical stuff anyway.. I don't think I should talk.. :p

everyone listen to shuzer and put the lighting argument to rest.

I would like it if Half-Life 2 had dynamic lighting / shadows like DooM 3. I actually think some shadows are dynamic, for instance if you shoot an overhead lamp you should see shadows dance around, it's just that it's not fully dynamic like it is in DooM 3. At least that's what I remember Rick or someone saying.

I think what he's trying to say...is that the objects that are lit by the flashlight don't cast shadows behind them. Like the light goes right through them.

Ok here we go with a v.probably repeat-post;

Does;

a) hl2 support dynamic shadows?
b) Use them?

If yes to both;

Can a patch turn them on? i'd love the flashlight to cast them :)

(im guess no to both as otherwise it'd b an option :()

Read shuzer's post. It does and it doesn't.

chriso20, HL2 already uses dynamic shadows. What you're asking for is multiple dynamic shadows from more than one light source. HL2 does not feature this, as far as all the information we have has dictated. The engine supports it (see: Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines), but it's not in use in HL2 (scability reasons?).
