So... tell me because I am curious.

Do any of you have speech disfluencies? A speech disfluency is when you break up your normal speech patterns and insert something like the common "uhh" or "err" before continuing on. Other examples are ones like "like" as in when somebody says "Well, like I was going to the mall and like me and my friends were like talking, and like Christy was like..." blah blah blah.

You guys have any of those?

Also, tell me the ones you especially hate! I know when you pay attention to them they can be incredibly aggravating, and sometimes you want to tell the person to just shut up and stop doing it.

Yes I have it very badly, especially when I'm tired. Each sentence contains like 8 different "errs" and "umms" then lol

I got it from my dad

I make use of many speech disfluencies. "Uh" is the most common one. I also seem to change which disfluency I use based on who I'm talking to.

Not really. Instead of saying "uh" or anything, ill just not say anything for a second while I gather my thoughts.

I have a friend who says 'uhh' before every sentence.
EVERY SENTENCE. EVERY. E-VER-Y.
:|
I don't speak clearly.

everyone does this, even if it's just by pausing instead of saying "uh"

I'll use words to cover up that I'm thinking of a reply, such as well or so, and use err and um occasionally. I'll use them a heck of a lot more in a speech though. When I was at school I used to have a principle whose every second word was err or um. Used to take him twice as long to say anything than everyone else.

I guess I do, but rather then 'uhh' or 'umm' or 'like' I just cease to speak for a small period, so I'd be like: So I was..Talking to this guy...and I..killed him, and...yea.

But I only do that very rarely, only when I'm tired or angry or not in the mood to talk or something, normally I just talk like a regular person.

I even notice myself that I have major speech disfluencies. I use "uhhh" and "ummm" and I use the phrase "and like"

I just think it is the result of trying to think too fast while talking. Instead of actually thinking then talking.

Yeah, I have some like, seriously, like, seriously, like, seriously, like...f*ck! Ok, let me start over.

I...lllli--damn it. I serio--damn it. That thing you said in your post. I like, totally have that. Seriously.

Seriously.

I grew up in California in the eighties. How could I NOT constantly say, "like" as a filler between every other word? It slips in unnoticed by me most of the time, inserting itself into my speech as though it were necessary for me to form a sentence. Although I can, of course, converse without it, in a relaxed setting when I'm not worried about being particularly obsequious with my grammar I'm, like, totally going to say it all the time.

'Seriously' and 'for serious' crop up in there as well, along with assorted curse words that can--and often do--replace the number of 'likes' peppering my speech. I never say "um," but sometimes rarely 'uh.'

Yes. Depends on the situation though. Sometimes I can carry an entire convo without.

When I was younger I had speech therapy for a really bad stutter, and I still have trouble with s's. So as well as the standard french "uhhhhhhhhh" I put between almost everything, there is also that. Sexy.

Tsk, you shouldn't have taken speech therapy for a stutter. You should've just kept it and taken up the lyrical art of scat, and talked that way all the time. You would've been the coolest cat on the block, I guarantee.

God damn it, yeah, I think I do. "Uhhhhh" in English, "ehhhhhh" in Danish. The E is actually the Danish letter for OE combined. Imagine if you say "Earth", then just prolong the "ea" part. Anyway, I do it more in English, though. But in about half of the cases, it's to keep a sentence going. For example when I'm asked about something, and I go like "Yeah I have... uhhhh... three slices of pie".

Does it count as a speech disfluency that I said like before the quote? Nah, it can't.

I also do the "well" thing a bit I think.

don't do it very much at all.... however my dad will often start a sentence pause for awhile while he thinks about the rest and then sometimes finish it.

Sometimes?

Does he just walk away mid-sentence other times?

Oh I do that sometimes. I'll be in the middle of a sentence

then you come back and be like HEY HERES THE REST!

Yeah, I've been known to do that as well. I just trail

and I'll forget to end it until later when i realize what ive done.

off and then come back in several minutes and act like nothing happened. Most people get confused as hell.

I used to have a bad habit of saying "you know what I mean" or "ya-know" or "ya-hear me" too much, but I've broken the habit over the years practicing for numerous speeches for college classes and intern interviews.:P

I don't think I do.

I DO use "like" a lot when i'm speaking, but it's generally used properly as a comparator, and I just happen to comparisons A LOT in my day to day conversation.

Really? I'd hardly consider anything of the sort to be a Speech Disfluency. Labeling it as such makes it sound like such a detriment, when it's generally just a personal trait. Just the way some people talk.

Like when I talk, I use comparisons a lot. I say "I can picture it now..." a lot, and "i've noticed..." a lot.

You can't get down on people just for how they talk :/

Yeah, I do tend to use a lot of fillers when spontaneously speaking, especially "like" or "you know?". I wouldn't view it as something negative as it's a common trait that many people display in conversation, it just irritates me some times when I notice I'm doing it.

Lol! They quoted Bush on the Wiki page.

I have a few speech disfluences, not in English but in Spanish. I usually go, "eeeeh..." when I forget something.

Yeah. I'm actively trying to cut the "uhh" off the front of my sentences when talking to people now, actually. It's especially bad when I'm asking for things in a store or something, going to Subway is a nightmare. :P

I've also noticed recently that I say sort of or kind of alot in the middle of sentences, even when I'm typing.

I rarely can finish a sentence without using 'like'. It pisses me off that I can't do it, but, like, it's hard not too.

Something like "eh" or "ah", I guess. That's kinda interesting to read about, though, especially the foreign language part. I had an old, senile teacher who was from Taiwan at DLI, and he always said that "neige/zhege" thing with practically every sentence like he forgot what he was saying halfway through, and I think I picked that up from him even though Chinese isn't my native language.

I catch myself speaking in a southern accent sometimes. For some reason or anothe I always end up saying "God dammit" when talking to a friend. Especially if it's something bad.

"Know what I'm sayin' man?" usually comes up a bit too.

I can see that. If you go to McDonalds, all you have to ask for is a slab of shit in a bun and say "uhhhhhh yeah" when they ask "would you like fries with that?"
Subway, you'd be like...

Uhhh, honey wheat, err...I mean ... err, honey oat...and err...cheesesteak I mean um southwest cheesesteak with uh...

Glad I don't work at Subway!

I catch myself speaking in...a southern accent sometimes.

I'm so sorry.

Kidding, I mostly grew up in Louisiana, but moved two or three states north of there six years ago. Still, I catch myself talking in a strange southern accent occasionally and I really don't like it, so I try to counteract it by always keeping a pair of glasses slightly visible from my shirt pocket. :P

I have a moderate to severe stuttering problem.

I went to a clinic in Virginia, met some great people. It seemed to work great for about 2 weeks but then I found myself relapsing back into disfluency.

Really frustrating.

I just pause mid sentence for like 3 seconds every once in a while. It seems like the brain is having difficulty pronouncing a certian sound, though I can no longer remember which one(s?). It's slightly annoying, I hate it. But it's better than the stutter I had as a young child.
Luckily this isn't particularly common.
