Spikey Helmets

They just aren't as smart as you, man. You're thinkin' like 2 steps ahead of everybody else! You're like a f***in' genious, dude!

and that is why he is not in the Half Life universe. :P

My guess is that Helmets of any kind are helpful. Helps explain the lower rate of casualties amongst Marines, Security Guards and Combines. Though all have been zombified at some point (Marine and Security Guard zombies in Op4, and Zombines in the forthcoming Episode 1), so they're not immune. Maybe they took helmets off, or the headcrabs got violent :P

Of course, the spikey helmet hasn't been employed for its practically issues. It isn't important to kill the headcrab, just to make sure it doesn't attach itself to you. Who wants to work, rest and play with a giant spike on their head? ^^

Mongolian hordes and German soldiers in World War I, apparently.
But that would make the rebels look like Mad Max-extras, so I understand, why no-one decided to implement the idea - next it would have been leather pants without buttocks.
