Can HL2 be played on a stand alone PC without an internet connection?

If offline mode is enabled beforehand, yes.

If you install it onto the system straight, no.

you will at some point need to be connected to the internet

you can.

but you would have to pirate it :D

No he couldn't coz in order to pirate it he'd need an internet connection.

It is kinda sucky that you need an internet connection to install. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know any other games that need a connection. Still, Most people have a connection nowadays.

or you can just borrow a friends dial-up connection for a bit...and authenticate that way \= *if you dont have intraweb*

Can you have sex with teddybears?

No.
I've seen much stranger things in my time on this planet!

I am connected and half way through the game and I was curious just how necessary the internet connection was/is to installing and playing HL2.
I've had a couple of different issues when Steam couldn't connect me or find my password for whatever reason. Obviously I've managed to fix these problems...but what a royal pain in the butt. If HL2 wasn't as good as it is...I would have trashed it and moved on.

If offline mode is enabled beforehand, yes.
Is this during HL2 install or is this an option to be chosen before starting the game for the first time?

Thanks
Redd

he meant "If offline mode is enabled beforehand via an internet connection, yes."

in other words at some point you will have to auth with steams servers...it doesn't need to be on the comp. that you have HL2 installed though(e.g. register at friends house, netcafé etc.)

It is a setting to be chosen under settings in Steam during whatever time you whish.

Okay cool, thanks very much.

In a non related question so I don't have to start another thread...
How come I have to be a headcrab in the I.D. box to the left where my name and avitar is? Do I have a choice in this? ;)

The higher your post count, the higher your status as something from HL2 apparently, don't worry too much about it, no one really cares about em anyway.

And just to clarify the thread topic, it only needs to be connected to register the cd key, after that, once put into offline mode you can play it offline for ever and ever....

Nope, it's based on your number of posts, first you're a headcrab, and after some posts (don't remember how many, maybe 40) you become a zombie, and then something else, don't remember, bullsquid, ichtysaur, vortigaunt etc etc...

Hehe, you have absoloubtly no choice in the matter. And what're you saying? headcrabs are COOL! :afro: :imu:

Uuuh... Anyway, I guess you could install it on a different computer (With a DVD writer), log into your account, and then copy the clientregistry.blob file to your other computer, so when you boot steam it'll think you've connected recently and will let you play in offline mode.. I think, but don't kill me if it's wrong ;)

hmmm, i have the "don't store information on this computer" thingy unchecked so why does it still harrass me for an internet connection?
hmmm?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
