The Star Wars Empire at War thread, and the subsequent download of the demo got me thinking about strategy games again. I was wondering if anyone played Star Wars Rebellion. It was released in 1998. It can be played either as a single player game or you can play head to head with one other person.

I don't know how easy it would be to find, but any strategy gamer should definitely check this out. It's not a graphically intensive game though, so if you need state of the art graphics this one probably isn't for you. It's got a steep learning curve too. Fun game though and I was just wondering if anyone else has played it.

I have that game, learning curve was amazingly steep. I took longer figuring out how to play this game than Alpha Centauri which was the first "Civilization" style game I ever played.

Damn difficult too even once you knew what you were doing and very time consuming. However I loved it and also found it strangely addictive. I still remember creating gargantuous fleets for both the Rebels and Empire once I had exhausted ship research and using them in massive battles. I also loved how it introduced new ships that I have never seen in any Star Wars games or movies either. CC-7700 frigate (Alliance ship used to prevent enemies from going into hyperspace and escaping a battle), Interdicter cruiser (Imperial CC-7700 equivalent and also seen in Jedi Knight 2 mysteries of the Sith I think), Bulwork battlecruiser (Alliance equivalent of the super star destroyer), Assault frigate, Victory class star destroyers (cheaper, older, and weaker models of the regular star destroyers), etc.

Great fun but certainly not a game for everyone.

I take it that this game's for hardcore strategists?

Certainly true about not being for everyone. The AI can be very tough, that's for sure. I start a game every now and then when I have nothing else to play and get consumed, just like you said. The games take sooo long to finish.

Did you happen to try the Empire at War demo? It, and just about every other star wars strategy game, felt so simplistic in comparison.

I would say... kind of. I think it might take a serious strategist to be willing to put in the time to learn the game. Once you get the concepts down though, I'd say a weekend strategy warrior would have no problems with it. The graphics are really poor though and that would turn off most people with only passing interest in strategy games.

I've been trying to get my hands on the new demo but the internet connection we are given while living on campus at university is terrible. I'm hoping by tommorow I will have it. :dozey:

Man I loved that game. I remember the endgame was so great, building up a massive fleet and dominating everything in my path. I would have so many fighters in my fleet that they alone could take down enemy cap ships. And then there were the Bulwark Battlecruisers... Ah good times.
