Here is the situation: I love seeing maps, models, mods etc that the community can make, and I've finally decided to get into the scene and start learning.

What I'm looking for is advice on what to start on first; I expect I will start on mapping and stuff to get the artist juices flowing, then look at learning coding for mods and stuff. (don't flame me if this is BS, I'm a n00b remember!)

How did you get started? What tips/advice would you give?

Any constructive help greatly appreciated :D

I'd go for interlopers.net, some good stuff + people there.

Just remember... whatever you make tonight or within the next month, don't publish it.

lol I won't, trust me.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'll make sure it's allllll good.

Cheers for the help. :imu:

Well if you're like alot of mappers, including me, you'll get really interested in an idea, and then 25% into the map you'll lose interest and give up. Just keep making stuff over and over, never spend too much time on one thing unless it's an important thing to know.

First and foremost, what I would clearly and strongly recommend is enter google.ca and find things on architecture and urban mapping. An level designer than have tons of 3D experience and what not, but if he does not have a handle of how architecture works then the map will end up being unattractive, unscaled and probably crap. Do that then learn Hammer.

And be sure to keep golden rectangles in mind... 1:618
