Startup Problems

I got this problem with HL2, you know, the game this site was made for? Anyway, the game just shows the window saying "Preparing to launch Half Life 2..." and then just goes away. The game is fully downloadded, it says Status Ready, the computer is decent enough and has played perfectly in the past, like a month ago, but just won't work. In task manager i see the "Process" mof hl2.exe running, but that goes away too. Is there something I'm missing? A new video card, an update, a priest, what? Help me, otherwsie I'll have nothing to do on Wedensdays... other than watch the fine programs on FOX.

Do you have a firewall running? Try launching Half-Life 2 in windowed mode and see if it works.

Right click HL2 > Properties > General > Set Launch Options > Add: -window to the launch options > OK.

You may receive a prompt from your firewall asking you to allow access to hl2.exe, if you do, hit yes.

could it have anything to do with Windows XP?

Not the best solution to the problem, but it always works for me. Its a CD drive issue. Try putting hot glue in the drive bay and see how it runs. If you have no luck, try putting some on the motherboard, see if that helps.

Alright, now it (in all its infinite wisdom) has an error reading:
MountAppFilesystem() failed: SteamMountAppFileSystem (220,0,0x158cdf0c) failed with erroe 1: Steam is busy, please try again later. I've been trying for a [insert curse adjective] week now and still nothing happens!

One of your files have become corrupt. Quit steam, Delete, ClientRegistry.blob. Restart steam. You can Always undo it if you don't believe me. Let us know how you get on.

Well ... what worked? I am having exact same issue. Finished game, never had an issue. Formated my machine a few weeks back, clean install, all games, apps, etc all work fine. EXCEPT ONE!! HL2 gives exact same issue as what you had. HL2.exe just sits running @ 0% cpu and does nothing after Steam says it has launced it.

I put my system in DMZ, made no difference.

I did full uninstall and reinstall ... still no difference.

E-mailed tech support on this a week ago ... no reply!
