The Steam Hardware Survey results are in for December 2009 and they make for some interesting reading. Nvidea and Intel dominate the graphics and processor categories and there has been a steady rise in dual- and quad-core processors appearing in your machines. Hmm, I wonder if the low uptake of ATi's new cards shown there is simply because so many people got their value 8800 nVidias and don't want to upgrade to something not-that-much-better even if it also has good value for money.

Well the 8800 is the most popular but it's also DX9. The second most popular is the Radeon 4800 series and that's DX10. They're pretty close. Combined they make up about 20% but then 40% are various Nvidia cards like the 9800 and 8600.

I'm going from Nvidia's 9600 to ATI's 4850 so maybe that will skew the percentages.

I've used this resolution until recently. I had a 17 inch CRT which only supported refresh rates over 60Hz up to 1024x768. I prefered 85Hz so had to stick to this resolution and didn't really mind this.

For so many years, I was a 640x480 guy. Then I was SOOO reluctant to do 800x600, because shit was so small. Well, I did it and got used to it. Then the next obvious step was 1024x768. Obviously, I did the same thing. "I can't see shit, wtf this is dumb." Now I'm sitting at the highest res possible.

I was the opposite and was always trying to run at the highest resolutions possible for my hardware. I like the smaller icons because they take up less space. Now the modern OS's are designed to be able to have large icons at high resolutions...

It's good to know that my hardware is among the oldest currently in use.

Replaced it with a GTX 260.

Replaced mine with a 4890 a while ago. Mates died several weeks before that and replaced with a 4870. My brother skipped all this nonsense and just bought a 5770 after getting back from Japan.

Just don't start a NVIDIA vs ATI / INTEL vs AMD fight - I've had them all and loved them all, for me it depends on which performs best at lowest price at the time I want to upgrade.
