Are these connection issues common problems, or just on my end? So far it seems like 99% of the time I hang on Verifying Resources, then I time out. If I do get into the game (this has happened once) I get a normal ping, but my connection is interrupted almost immediately and I'm forced to exit.

ok my problem:
We got a new computer because my old one was not good for source, it is a good comp with high specs, high enough for source because i can intall and play BFME2. I intalled source from my steam account without the disc and let it update which was all fine, it sed that it was ready went to play and as soon as source loads at the loading screen the computer reboots. i tried reinstalling but the same happend, i installed using a freinds disc and the same happend, i installed half life 2 and the same happend. My guesss is its a problem with steam but im really stuck. any advice would be apreaciated.

On machines using nForce audio go to Options > Audio and switch to 2 speakers. This should stop you from crashing when joining your game.

There is also a crash that can happen with nVidia based video cards that is corrected with the following Beta drivers from nVidia:

Hello Glen, we do not deal with any of this kind of related thing, as we are not connected to it in any way, shape or form. Although i can tell you this: VAC is an automatic ban system, and your steam_id will be banned for 1 year despite your efforts. You can look around on www.steampowered.com and their forums, but the fact remains - if you cheat you will be punished. Learn a valuable lesson, the hard way.
