This thread is just going to be my 3d sketch book so to speak. My final uni project is underway and i thought it would be nice to get some feedback on any work i finish over the next 6 months.

So, in this thread we will find mainly props, weapons and characters. Hopfly by the end all textured animated and working in game. But to start with all work will be WIP but crit is welcome.

If anyone wants some more info on what the project is going to be I don't see why i can't give out some information or drawn and painted concept work.

Art test, Hopfly we will be seeing the self illumination feature on the character design.

looks good so far.....are you majoring in game design or something?

I'm not sure the equvalents accross waters but im doing a BA(hons) in computer and video games (course title there) at the Solent University in Southampton UK. Just started final year, got dissitation out of the way quick and have now started pre-production on our major project.

sweet! best of luck in the industry!

cool, nice to see you're work man !! :D what rifle is that ?

Its a cross between a G3, a sig and some other random thing i found. The weapon is designed to look quite solid and mecanical to represet the distrust of technology from the team who are going to be using it.

Was the random other thing you found a "imi galil" ? And do you have more work we can see ?

At the moment i dont really have to much stuff to show off. I have just been doing alot of work on learning to texture more then anything elce. I have some old portfolio which is out dated and which isnt very good.

-Simple art test character. doing some animation for him now as well speek.

To say this work is pritty out dated. You can also check out the crossbow for BlackMesa:Sorce the model is mine but not the texture.

i think courses just teach you that it all comes down on practice.

Bad news,

My hard drive failed and i have lost all the source files for ^^ work, i think i might be able to salvage some backups for a few bits from uni but overall i'm ****ed :(

That's ****ed up. I have too backup my work !

-dodo

Backing up is for girls! Real men live life constantly on the edge!

/me goes to back up important Black Mesa files.

After a scary near-miss hard disk catastrophe last week, I set up an SVN server on my LAN and back up everything to that now. So not only do I have backups, but now version control too. Win!

Why is everyone's hard drive always failing whenever they're doing important work?

I've never experienced a hard drive failing and losing data like that...hmph.

My drive just died also. 250 gigs of stuff gone! Luckily I was working off of my external hard drive, and had back up copies on the school network. Sorry to hear about your incident Stormy. Does that mean you will need to take the class again?

I have lost alot of previous work but i have luckly managed to find a few backup's the the most important stuff im working on right now. I was so close to being really far behind with my uni work its unreal.

Shouldn't really have to retake, nothing at the moment that suggests that i might need to. Gunna have to wait and see if there are any more failers.

Been having abit of a go at texturing my gun.

I got abit fed up of looking at it and couldnt decide how well i was doing with it so please crit. Its not 100% finished by any means but its a good stage to start getting some crits.

More scratches, staines, and dirt. Also the metal could look more like metal. It could be plastic for all i know. And of course the wood texture... but i understand its still in progress, soo, ... looking great I suppose !!
:D

Today i have made a start texturing these hands which where modeled yesterday. These will be for the first person view and will be holding the guns etc.

Good job man :D just one crit really, at the moment the mesh looks more like a world models hand.

You can afford more detail, especially at the joints. It will let you make weight blending more uniform so the bending of the fingers and wrist won't have any noticeably odd texture distortion on the stretching edge (ie the knuckles on the fingers).

Just gives you more flexability for animations aswell as making it look nice on the eye seeing as it sits right up close to the viewpoint.

Wow, i'm quite surprised you said that it had quite a low count, i thought i was going over the top quite abit and had possibly put to man in. Luckly before i started unwrapping and texturing i made abit of a quick test rig and it deforms quite well. But saying that i didn't test the wrists, i think i may had to add some polys there. But ill see how it goes, if i remeber rightly max dosnt mind you adding more geomarty once in the skinning stages.

As long as you use Edit Poly, you can get away with it. Also, you can drag the skin modifier back to the top of the stack.

Cool, well i will add another loop around the wrist tomorrow and also finish off the texture, also try and get rid of that god awful seam down the inside of the arm.

Yeh, you can quite happily use the cut tool, and remove and add edges and vertex points without disturbing the UVW unwrap aswell. Just aslong as vertex points connected to more than two edges arn't removed, that has a habbit of messing it up even when you set the mesh to an editable poly.

So, started on my first character today, quick render of progress.

And the hands again, made a cople of changes with the scale, in particular the little finger which was a touch to small. I have also finished the texture, added a normal map and increased the tris around the wrist area to help with the deforming. I should probly make a few adjustments to the weighting on the figers but they probly wont be seen to much wile in the game.

Time for an update! Been slowly chugging away over the last few days, annoyingly this is taking a little longer then expected. I planned on a 3 day modeling spree but it has turned into 4. But by tonight the modeleing process should be complete. And unwrapping will begin tomorrow!

faithlight03ln8.jpg

Made a 1/2 decent start on the texture. Obviosly not compleated yet, going to have a second texture map for all that is currently black.

prope1.jpg

You're doing really well with this stuff, those guns look really good with the textures!

wow very nice stuff, love your glock texturing a lot.

One comment on the hands though, I think you're using too many polies in the finger joints, the underside will hardly be noticable when deforming, especially when holding a weapon, you could easily get a way making the joints out of diamonds like you did to the knuckles, and leave the under side to a single loop. It also looks kind of weird imho, like a sort of wrinkle where the top part of the finger tucks into the joint or something, ofcourse every hand is unique, but mine are a bit more flat than that and you could easily just give the illusion its more rounded than really taking the detail all the way to the sides, savespolies in any case.
Just a small detail :) they look great, nice the material on those gloves aswell.

Another bit of an update, started work on the second character now and this really is turning into quite a long slug. I have around 11 to 12 weeks left still have 2 and 1/2 characters to finish... models/textures/animation/working in source + 3 weapons.... all working in source.
The faith light is near enough compleat, he has a few texture seams that need sorting but other then that he is finished. Second character here is the start of the tech light. Texture in progress, i think i'm going to get some camo on the trouses over the next cople of days.

techah2.jpg

Other news, first weapon is compleat with animations and i have also made a start on the rig for the light characters.

The tech light character is now near enough compleat.

Its getting mighty quite down these parts of the woods :(

Ahg, i think i'm finealy finished with adjustments. I think a slight error on my behalf ment that the geomatry was a little off on the fac, hence the eyes being to spaced out etc. My referance was not 100% face on so i copied 1/2 the face and mirrored it. This left me with a slightly off referance image to start with :( But i have learnt from my mistakes and hopfly it wont happen again. So brought the eyes in a bit sorted the hair by blending the skin to hair transistion a little more. Time to start sorting the full bright/spec/normal maps.

techlight05da1.jpg

the hands look very very nice. you've captured the topology quite well. you should make a tut on modeling hands and characters in general they're one of the hardest things to make.

Ta dude, it is some thing i'm thinking about but it wont be for a little wile. I have to finish uni first :)

A render with the final texture sizes, normal maps + self illomination.

It's awesome.

Is the nose supposed to look like that, by the way? It's a little bit pressed back.

2 weapons ingame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iIHWjZP1f4

Made a start on some character animation today, taken a bit longer then i expected but 2 characters are in game with some simple idle animations, going to get some run cycles on the go tomorrow.
